In this case, the question was... will the cast 19" wheel will be lighter than the forged 19" wheel.

All things being equal, the cast wheel will NOT be lighter than a forged wheel of the same size. However, in the event that is it, the cast wheel achieved its low weight because it may have less material, therefore, less material normally mean less rigidity in the wheel which may cause a wheel to bend or be structurally weaker.

If you think that BMW made a cast wheel that is lighter and stronger than the more expensive, super light forged wheel, then I think you are wrong.

Consider other wheel manufacturers like BBS and HRE, who are in the top echelon of wheel making. They too have trouble getting a comparable forged monobloc wheel to be lighter than the stock forged 19"s. The only wheels that I have read about being lighter and stronger are the RAC wheels in the current GB.

Properly manufactured forged material is inherently stronger vs. cast, so for the same style cast wheel to be as strong as its forged counterpart, more material needs to be added to the cast, which makes them heavier. Hence the comment.
+1

Thanks for clarifying that.

Yes, Neez is made by the same people to make the RAC wheels (forged on a 8000 ton press). Fikse wheels are also very light as are RAYS/Volk. Have you looked at the weights of a these wheels compared to the factory forged 19"s? Compare a monobloc style when in the same width and size as the factory 19"s. 9/10 the factory forged 19"s are actually lighter.

Additionally, a set of comparable wheels from Neez is about $7k; the RACs are $4k because they were designed by Shep and Co. with the help of forum members with a minimum of 20 orders. I highly doubt BMW is putting $7k wheels on any on their cars. Considering that the cast wheels are actually less expensive than the factory forged, the package will not include anything at the Fikse, RAYS or Neez level. I would say they may be marginally better than VMR wheels, which are quality, certified cast wheels.

+2 on the group buy if it happens. I am in for the rear spoiler for sure and the splitters if the price is right.

For what it's worth, SZ, the RAC RG63s look like they weigh in at 20 lbs front and 21 lbs rear, whereas the 220Ms weigh in at 23.5 lbs front and 25.5 lbs rear according to:

Yes, the RAC wheels are awesome and unfortunately, I had to remove myself from the GB this go around. It will be very difficult to find a wheel that outperforms the OE 19"s unless, of course, you employ 8000T forging...like the forging employed to make a RAC or Neez wheel.

My whole point was that if the new performance package wheel is cast, it will not be lighter than the factory forged 19'. To get a lighter wheel, one must go with a Neez or RAC, which is by far, a better wheel than BMW will ever put on one of their consumer level cars.

Yup. In the absence of hard data, it's always been my assumption that the 359M (factory ZCP) wheel will weigh more than the 220M (factory 19s), but lighter than the 260 (factory 18s).

+1 I agree.

Edit:

However, I wish they would be forged because we will now have another factory option for our M3s. Things being equal, I will always buy a BMW part over a non-BMW part.

my guess is that the ZCP wheels will utilize "low pressure casting" to keep the weight down.

Alloy Technic also makes a super light monoblock forged wheel.

I recall that BMW said the GTS wheels are flow-formed cast. Assuming these are just the GTS wheels with a silver finish, then they'll likely be manufactured the same way.

Both. The adhesive is there to sitck and to prevent the bumper from being scratched by the CF add-on

Count me in too on the splitters.

I think I'd like to get a set of the comp wheels and powder coat them in matte black....
