Oil Level Measurement & Turn Light Code in 2011 E92 M3

2 Questions:

Topped up my oil 2 weeks ago and everything was fine with the level reading below maximum until yesterday, when the reading now says that my oil level is higher than maximum and recommends going to the Stealer. It has remianed like that today also. I hate these electronic measurements and definitely prefer the old school dip stick.

Has anyone had this issue?

My check light for the rear right signal light comes on sporadically. Every time I check, the blinkers are working fine. Gremlins??

Thanks

Depends on how much oil you added at the time. You should never add more than half a liter at a time when the "add oil" light comes on.

Check the connector for light corrosion or proper connection............Phil

Agreed. It can become a tedious process but I have followed the above advice and have never overfilled.

I've been told by my SA to only add a quart when the system tells you do, and only 1qt at a time. He said BMW sees it as acceptable for the motor to eat ~1qt every 700 miles or so depending on use, and as its eating oil over time just keep adding the qt as the light tells you until due for full oil change. The risk of damages due to overfill is too costly to play around with. He did say you need to really be beating the piss out of the car to get it to consume like that though.

Here's the link to the bulletin for the rear brake light issue.

Had the same issue at the track with my M3. Took it in for it's last warranty service and they fixed it....no issues since.

The oil thing happened to me just last week. Coming home from vacation when I stop the car a warning symbol showing an oil can pops up and a warning on the i-drive says add a quart of oil. Now I know that the oil measurment system does not give really consistent readings from one start to another so I wait a day to see if the warning repeats. It does, 3 times in a row. So I add a quart (a litre actually, 1.05 US quarts), like it asked me to. It then says I've overfilled it, go see the dealer.

It was going in for another reason that week anyway so the dealer drained and measured the oil as a check, then put it all back in. All under warranty. The funny thing is that the morning I was driving it to the dealer it finally said that the oil level was at max but ok. They still checked it and the oil level sensor.

I told the SA that I really wished the car had a dip stick and his response was yeah, tell me about it. I think they get that a lot.

This event cost BMW money for a warranty claim. I don't see why they don't put a dip stick in the car.

go to dealer. Go directly to dealer, do not pass go, do not collect $200.

I'm interested to see what the message says that you must go to dealer? A minor overfill will just say that it's on max. If you get all sorts of warning messages in your idrive then you should take it to the dealer for a drain.

My oil sensor on my '11 did something similar after I put in some oil. The dealer swapped the sensor twice - no joy. Upgraded the software - all fixed.

The newest software fixed the oil sensor accuracy issue.

Well mine was apparently a minor overfill as it cleared within a few days. It still told me to go in for service and have it checked.

Oil

Dealer drained, replaced sensor and said Nothing was wrong All under warranty. They couldn't find anything with the signal error which had gone when I took it in. Now it is back!
