Any road tests on e92 w/ sunroof?

Does anyone know if one of the mags or webistes out there have done a road test on a e92 with sunroof? I'm just curious as to how it the numbers would compare to an e92 with CF, an e92 with comp pkg, etc.

Thanks

There isn't an appreciable performance difference, unless MAYBE you're a pro racing driver.

The most common reasons most people go for the moonroof seem to be:

1. They don't like the look of CF with their exterior color.
2. They want to be able to open their roof.
3. There's less road noise with a moonroof than CF.

The most common reasons most people go for the CF roof seem to be:

1. It looks cool and isn't a common feature of cars in this segment.
2. They want the additional headroom.
3. It's known to cause speed.

The above posters have all stated the important stuff. I would say if you track the car go CF because if you're tall, your helmet may hit the roof but if this is a DD/Weekend ride then I wouldn't be concerned from a performance perspective.

Also, depending on exterior colour you may want CF (Melbourne Red, Alpine White, Silverstone, Space Grey). The lighter colours make the roof pop. In my opinion the darker colour don't matter as much (Jerez, Black, Interlagos etc).

I have to agree having driven a e46 for many years with a sunroof and having not used it very often.

I purchase a new M3 with CF roof again in a heart beat it is a much better looker, lowers the centre of gravity and is lighter as well so there you have it

^This. I have an E90 but I added a bunch of CF junk so really I got the benefit of 4 doors AND the added horsepower of CF. You just have to be smart and understand what makes power and what doesn't.

you wouldn't want one, you have a 95% chance of doing this with a sunroof:

Its a few pounds here and there but that is how you make a dent in weight.

You have a tough time feeling 30 horsepower yet you cannot say it does not matter. The lighter the better and 30 pounds (or 45 compared to moonroof which most get if not the CF) is a HUGE savings from the highest point of gravity! Like it or not if you want the better car, the CF roof is what you go with
People who buy a sunroof will defend it by saying the benefits of the CF roof are meaningless. People who go CF will say it makes a difference. IMO, I believe it would make a difference for many of the reasons you note (i.e. weight at the highest point possible) but I'm not convinced I would "feel" the difference. Would there be a measureable difference at the track if the same pro driver tried both? My guess is yes but it would be slight. I like it because it's unique and because I like the idea of the placebo effect and have convinced myself that I'm faster because of it

Well...

Tell me if I'm nuts but if we are discussing 45 pounds that is about 50 inches above the ground, wouldn't that lower the center of gravity as much as lowering our ~3600lb cars by about 0.65 inches? Is that not felt to be rather significant for handling?

Don't say such things!! It can't possibly be true because that would actually make a difference and it would make the sunroof a poor choice

On a serious note, curious as to how you calculated the 0.65".

I weigh 155. The majority of fat asses on this board probably push 200+. I'm safe with my moon roof.

I think the real question is whether a carbon fiber roof or a moonroof affects how you drive over speedbumps.

calculation

Concept is Wt1X height1= wt2X ht 2 so 45lbs at 50 inches ht has ~ impact of wt of car at .65 ht difference Thought more and realized it's really the ht above the axle but that probably makes it = to 1/2 inch drop.
