I'm trying to decide between these two as well. At least it's a fun decision to make.

Or you could go the other end of the spectrum and get the Megan exhaust. It sounds fantastic, great build quality/fitment, and one of the only decently priced exhaust available.
Because weightloss. Still boggles my mind that such a performance oriented group of people don't consider the potential almost 50 lbs weight loss.

I'd pay full price for an MPE than put on a free akra someone gave me.

All the other exhaust systems out there take away the already unique sound the M3 has. The MPE amplifies it and changes it into a more unique sound. Plus weight savings of over 20 lbs with Inconel. No brainer if you ask me. And none of these slip ons are going to give you anything noticeable in hp gains so choose on sound first, then looks, then price, tho I wouldn't let cost compromise my top choice.

Not to hijack, but we do have to cut off the back section with a saw to install a slip on correct?

I prefer the sound of the MPE. Check out the YouTube clips of both, most of them are good representations. They're 2 very different sounding exhausts.

I'm a fan of Akra and I would suggest it because it would be easier to upgrade to a full system later (can add the Akra Evo mid-pipe more easily). Plus there are many available used and it will be easy to sell in the future if/when you move on to another car.

Thank you all for your feedback. So now it's coming down to sound and looks. I combed the net on prices. At this point they're within $200 of each other.

Sound - Leaning towards the MPE.
Looks - The Akra, hands down.

I don't plan on going to a full system so that's not an issue.

Decisions decisions....

No one who buys the slip on does. But after a few months things change. I was 100% sure I was going to stay with the slip on. Bought the Evo xpipe like a month or 2 later.

I would vote for MPE as I own one..It sounds fantastic..As for Looks, I dont care as you don't see it while driving and many people might not notice your exhaust..Exhaust should be noticed only on how it sounds not on how it looks ..all the best..

I said the exact same thing. 1 month after I got the rear section I ordered test pipes from Turner. I can't tell you how much better the car sounded after not to mention the very noticeable added power. fast forward 4 months and i'm on the wait list the the MRF motorsport x-pipe! I won't even mention how many other rear sections I've considered swapping in even though I already really enjoy the one I currently have on. As soon as you here other M3's with different set ups in person its hard for the mind not to wonder...

If you really don't even believe its a possibility you'll eventually modify your mid-pipe I say the MPE sounds better as a slip-on only. With that said consider even BMW never used that exhaust on any of their factory racers. Also all the new BMW Performance exhausts are made by Akrapovic.

Eh, I don't like how any exhausts sound other than the MPE. My preferences for things in life are quite strong and especially with things like my car, if it's not 100% to my liking, money be damned, I won't have it.

But I understand how people might think it's nuts to not take a free akra.

Anyone have a good shot of the underside of the stock M3 that shows where the oem exhaust unbolts or comes off? I could have sworn I've seen a pic and it was one piece.

I just bought an Akra slip on, still waiting for it to arrive, was in the same pickle.. Wanted a more throatier sound, from research the Akra was that... MPE was said to be too civilized, and for 3000+ i wanted something that I wouldnt want to upgrade too fast.

I got the MPE but the Akra is a very close second for me. It just came down to sound preference.

Ok, I'll bite - damn this board! LOL

"IF" I went for the pipes, would it increase the decibel levels considerably and or introduce a drone to the mix? Considering I pull the trigger on the Akra.

Keep in mind, I'm running an AA rear section now that sounds great however is too loud for my lifestyle and drones like crazy. The AA is coming off ASAP.

My primary objective is to get a quieter exhaust than the AA without the drone.

I was told by ACM that my set up sounds like a mix between the akra and mpe.. you could try that ESS slip on and ACM test pipes.. but between the two I'd choose Akrapovic because you WILL want to get TP's or a full system sooner or later lol I know from experience

I have the Akra Evo right now. It is probably pushing the envelope of what I would want for a DD car (which mine is). I'm hoping it tames down just a hair as it breaks in. If not, it might not pass the wife test.

I must admit that one of the things I loved about the stock M3 is how insanely quiet it is until you get on it. Everyone who went for a ride (pre-Akra) commented on how quiet it is. The Akra takes some of that away and makes you feel like you are in a muscle car, not a luxury car. Stock felt like a 5 Series at cruise; Akra feels a little more like a hot rod, if that makes sense.

But I must say, the additional power the Akra brings is intoxicating, especially with the BPM Stage 2 tune (which I'd have to give up without the Akra). Once I get the Dinan intake on there and possibly a pulley (Dinan?), you can tell this thing will be very fast for an N/A M3.

One thing no one has mentioned is the Dinan, which is supposed to be comparable to the Akra if not a little more tame. Might be a dark horse candidate for this application.

The ESS slip on is the same as the ACM OEM exhaust mod?

No? I don't think I follow your question.. ACM installed my ESS slip on (not ACM oem mod) and their test pipes and they told me my car sounds like a mix between the akra and mpe.. I can't comment on the acm oem mod as I have no experience with it
