Stressing out about tires!

There comes a time in a mans life where your m3 needs new tires.

I got new wheels for my M3 and I just need a set of tires to accompany them with.

I have 3 in mind in no particular order.

1. PSS

2. Potenza S04

3. Conti DW

Need some advice here first time m3 owner and I have plans to tract it every once in a while. Mostly street driving and I live in the Bay area so not much rain mostly sunny specially here in Silicon Valley.

Well I've been running PSS for a while with no complaints at all.

Just recently needed some new shoes, and went with the S04s. I honestly can't tell the difference...but I'm not tracking it either. Mainly commuting with some decent aggressive drives through the canyons here in SoCal.

Cons...weight. On paper. But again, I can't feel the diff since I'm no professional.

Pros....price! Bang for the buck. Pretty tough to beat for what you get.

I guess tire wear will be the deciding factor next time. If these don't last as long, the price savings are probably negated somewhat. Time will tell.

Hope this helps!

I've driven on both PSS and S-04s. If you're poor, just get the S-04s, on a DD it won't matter and is a good tire

I probably would avoid continental DW. I had a set on my previous car (IS250 AWD), not a high power car and it was 100% DD. Three out of four tires had to be replaced under warranty after about 3 summers due to the inner side wall had developed serious cracks. My friend who is a mechanic at Mercedes said they had to warranty a bunch of them as well. Could be a bad production run of the conti, but I personally would get something else.

I heard that the S04s run out really fast. But If I'm gunna be doing just normal driving and SOMETIMES going on track then maybe the thread life cancels out th eprice difference.

Street tire you'll want the PSS, however its not a good track tire. If you want street and track use I recommend the Nitto nt05 or Bridgestone re71r/re11. Not as good as the michelin in the rain but like you said you don't get much. They wear out bit quicker than the Michelin as well.

PSS is great.

On a side note, you're stressing about tires when you should stress about rod bearings. (sorry someone had to say it.)

This exact comparison has been beaten to death countless times before. There is an entire section of the forum dedicated to wheel/tire discussions.

I have S04s, good performance and price. No complaints.

I think it could have been a bad production run, because I've been running them for 3 years and they're fantastic for a DD tire.

Out of the 3 options I've only run PSS and Conti's. I'd def go with PSS. Better tread life and traction.

PSS. No need to look elsewhere for quiet, grippy, long lasting and great looking performance daily driver tires.

I've had contis as the stock tire on this car when it was new and they sucked. Lost grip, looked skinny and became louder.

On the track, I did three sessions on PSS at about 15 mins per session and the PSS would melt. Not a good track tire. It's the ultimate daily driver usable street tire.

This! (if you are really planning to track in them). While PSS has decent track grip, they have fairly soft sidewalls, and you can start chunking the edges pretty good after just a couple track weekends. I'm going to be replacing my fronts soon (waiting hopefully for a sale), as I have chunks missing on the outer treadblocks of my left front down to the cords, and that was after I think 3 2-day track weekends last year. Wish I'd gotten a stronger warning on this topic last year myself.

PSS

I have driven both DD and Track with the conti's and the PSS and there is no real comparison. The PSS has better dry traction by far, less noise, greater tread wear and do not blister on track days when compared to the conti's.

I hear the conti's have good wet traction but I wouldn’t know that living in Arizona.

My conti's literally lasted almost half the miles with worse traction than my current PSS's
