Before I started filing, I put them on the base one more time to make sure I knew what/where I was sanding and the bulb rotated right into position. When I went to do the second bulb, it looked again like it was going to need sanding, so on a hunch I took the bulb off and rotated it 180 degrees, and put it back on the base and it slid right into place. For reference, the bulbs I was using were the Amber WeissLicht bulbs.
It looks like the tolerances on these LED bulbs varies just enough to cause problems.

Yeah they don't look as bright. I think it might also be because with the stock bulb you easily see the whole actual bulb light up inside the signal enclosure, whereas with the LED you can't really see the light source unless you really look - as if the enclosure is magically blinking. The signal is still clearly visible in daylight though. I like the no more "egg yolk" look and instant on/off flashing.

Had my wife start the car, the flicker isn't very noticeable.

Ordered my white LED side blinkers from PYSPEED.com, and my white WeissLicht PY24W LED turn signals from Bimmian.com. Install was a little annoying for the front turn signal since I had to shave a little. Other than that, each install was pretty simple. No problems with bulbs. Flicker on start up, but goes away after a few seconds. Doesn't flicker if I just turn the lights on. Would post pics but everyone knows what these mods look like by now. Love the white look inside cabin and outside.

I have just installed the 23 LED ones today. Absolute biatch of a job too - but that is entirely due to not being able to get the original bulbs out; the cover had virtually sealed itself shut. Mine needed a little sanding and the prong ports widening (easy with a scalpel blade); but once I had done one the other side went much quicker. I didnt take my wheels off but found that turning the wheel outwards gave me better access than inwards.

They are definitely not as bright as stock fried egg bulbs but there is not that much in it.

I got mine from the same eBay vendor as Chris; he is called 909_BMW. I ordered the 18LED ones but he sent me 23LED ones free of any extra charge because he ran out if stock. Good prices and a good seller I would say. No flicker that I have noticed either.

^ cool! Thanks for the feed back. I see that you mention it's not as bright as the stock fried egg bulb (that's a funny way to put it ). Just wondering how much dimmer are they? Do you still think it's a worthwhile upgrade given that they are dimmer? Thanks again for your feed back.

I would say they are 10% dimmer, and a more even spread of the light compared to the point brightness of a bulb. I think it is worthwhile if your reasons for doing it are to get rid of the fried egg look, but not if you want brightness

I'm perfectly happy with how it looks.

The 18 LED look great, so I bet the 24 LED will be even brighter/better.

The 23 LED version is a major improvement over the 18 LED. The 23 LED is a much better match to the side LED also.

Yes, the new bulbs required a little sanding. However - I'm very impressed with these.

Thanks for the update. Glad I got the 18 and haven't even gotten the car yet. I'll try the 18's out and probably switch to the 23's next spring. Really appreciate you showing us the difference.

Can anyone provide some insight as to how the pins slide into the sockets on the bulbs? It does not seem to me like they would slide in at all. The sockets seem really "narrow" I was able to twist the bulbs without any problem but they simply do not slide into the pins on the housing. Has anyone modified the socket to fit the pins?

Thanks.

I pushed the entire bulb assembly straight in (using a very very small amount of forward force) before twisting it into position.

Just don't force it, you don't want to damage those pins.

Thanks. I tried putting the bulb alone (without the base) in just to see if I could get it to slide into the pins and that didn't work. I really think the pings are too "wide" for the sockets or maybe I just had a bad batch. I got mine from ebay though (909 something). Did you get yours off ebay too? They all look the same to me though...

The contact points on the LED bulbs do look significantly smaller than those on the OEM bulb and I was thinking about making them bigger some how but was able to insert them no problem when attached to the base. Just make sure the bulbs work before twisting to lock.

I broke one of my bulbs trying to modify it. Would someone sell me one(1) bulb they ended up not using as part of failed attempts to install? I have the 18 LED version.

Thanks!
