Does this sound about right? Update or no update necessary/recommended?
Recommended. You have very old SW as well.

Here are 2 seperate instances in which the 231E flash has showed considerable gains. Tests were performed on 2008 M3s, one 6MT and the other DCT-equipped.

MY08 6MT, 080E vs 231E

This particular M3 failed smog, even after plugs were replaced. DME was Identified as 080E, indicating very old SW. Updating to 231E provided an 18hp gain in power, cured his misfiring issue and was able to pass emissions.

MY08 DCT, 100E vs 231E

This was the car that started it all. This 2008 DCT with 100E ran a very low baseline. While his car was in for the VF620 supercharger - we wanted to perform a before/after test on SW versions to prove this wasn't only a theory before the supercharger was installed. As a result - all DMEs are now updated to the latest versions before tuning/supercharger installation.

After updating, a 20hp gain in power was achieved - looking much better than its baseline run. We're clearly on the right track.

These types of gains aren't seen by clearing adaptations on NA vehicles.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I scheduled my appointment for Tuesday. Only $159 here. I won't be running a dyno simply because the only dyno facility in the area is pretty bad.

Yes! We had DME Identification added in 2 weeks ago.

100E and 80E are extremely old software versions and the majority of cars will not have these versions unless they havent taken a trip to the dealer. There was a mandatory programming procedure for ISTA/P 2.40 which has newer software than 80E/100E

I just had a look at 240E, seems to be the latest version. You will not see gains like this unless the car has extremely old software, which is unlikely to begin with.

All of the cars I tune use the latest software as the base file. However, like I said, you're not going to see gains like this between semi-recent versions of the software.

Also keep in mind that this gain could be partially artificial to begin with. If the adaptations are cleared at flashing time (which is not an uncommon thing to happen), you'll instantly notice an increase in power because the car will hit it's targets as the process of adapting to the fuel quality hasn't completed.

That means if you take a car with 231E and then flash 231E into it AGAIN (same file), that you could potentially see an increase JUST from that alone.

I have the same integration level currently in dealers (ISTA/P 46.3). It's crazy that the dealers are telling people five hours labor and then if something breaks it's on you.. I plan on making a thread/ posting more information on integration levels and how they work / what software corresponds to what integration level..

I have updated a few cars in the last week to the latest levels with no issues.

I just had a look at 246E, seems to be the latest version. You will not see gains like this unless the car has extremely old software, which is unlikely to begin with.

Is ista/p 46.3 & 246E part of E89X-12-03-502 integration level?

AUS$500 flat for the new version of the software integration. The DME cannot be done on its own and depending on the car it might have to be left overnight.

I think I had mine flashed in 2009 when I had the new idrive controller installed. Can't remember what version it was at the time.

I have booked the car in for Thursday to get it done. It will be interesting to see whether any difference will be flet at all.

Dealers must have lost that in the couch along with the memo on changing the oil in the 6speed tranny ; )

My car has never been updated and it is a 09/08 build running 100E. The Nav software is horrible.

I don't know about this. Mine has been into the dealer many times (maint, and other warranty issues) and had 100E on it until last Monday. As well, my car was CPO'd about a year ago.

Dealer reprogram

Brought my 2009 M3 in last week to check a fault code.(turned out to be an isolated misfire)
Sterling BMW Newport Beach

They told me there was a recall and the entire car would have to be reprogrammed
Integration level:

Plant: E89X-08-09-539
Old: E89X-10-03-502 (for DCT update)
New: E89X-12-03-502

ISTA version 46.3.001

Done under warranty.

Feels like the shifts are smoother and more power.
Could be placebo effect.
P.S. They provide me a copy of the ISTA/P Final report with this and a lot of other data about which control modules were updated
