DCT FANBOYS! Yes you.

Well after years of reading how great the dct is and all these threads dct vs 6spd manual, I finally decided after a few years to finally take time out and test drive the mighty DCT. Well I must say DAMN! This is by far the best auto transmission I have ever driven, the up shifts were intoxicating, the sound, the pull while shifting, the precision, you name it. I am truly impressed with the DCT, call me old school but I still need the 6spd in my life but could definitely see me owning one some day. I could just imagine the DCT in the next gen M3/4 with the turbo boost and extra torque. And yes it felt faster than the 6spd manual.

And you thought here we go again DCT vs Manual. Props to the DCT technology I was never a fan of auto trans especially after test driving the CTS-V auto another reason I didn't give the GTR a chance, which will be my next test drive if I can find a used one.

DCT

I love that at least you refer to it properly as an Auto!

What's the difference between the DCT on the M3 (M-DCT?) vs. the DCT on the 135? I'm planning on getting a 135 but deciding whether to get it in AT or MT (leaning towards AT, already have the MINI with a MT).

Seriously, as a DCT owner I appreciate your review but WHAT were you expecting from this forum?

Not sure that's a good question as I would like to know myself. Let's play a game and see who is man enough to resist the dreaded DCT vs manual debate that has been beaten to death. Man up!

I was just kidding (but it is faster). I will say I enjoy driving a 6MT more on the street, and if I could own one of each I would

Your saying he knows how to do a rev matched downshift at track speed- if he's ever even been on a track.

I can heel toe just fine but that doesn't mean I can shift in the time a DCT can shift. I do enjoy 6MT more on the street, it is more engaging. There's also no risk of moneyshift with DCT. Everyone has a risk of moneyshifting on track if you're pushing it. I did so on a E36 M3 racecar years ago, but the $3-4k it cost me wouldn't get me too far S65 shopping. I don't know an experienced racer that hasn't moneyshifted something at least to the point of damaging stuff without actually blowing the engine.

Sorry for opening the can of worms, or extracting the worms from the can OP opened. Both are amazing cars, and I would personally drive a manual if I was street-only. It just makes more sense for me to have a car that is faster as well as incapable of being moneyshifted for my track use.

I own a 6mt, but Like OP I too drove a friend of mines DCT and its night and day. I love my 6mt, but that damn DCT is very fun to drive and I too got the impression that it was quicker. Regardless the S65 is a work of art no matter what tranny you are running with it.

I really hope the DCT on m3 is a lot different than the one in 135i. I do know the speed of the shifting in the 135i isnt adjustable like the m3. When I drive my sister's 135i I am a bit disappointed on normal driving but the shifts and downshifts are incredibly fast and it does amazes me how fast and somewhat smooth it shifts when I am driving it hard. I can only imagine what the m3 dct is like. Even now I cant stand auto because I cant control the gears and I still love 6mt. Btw does anyone else here hate how when you let go the brakes on auto they move forward? The 135i does that and yes I know the m3 doesnt.

Question I have about the DCT - if you're using the paddle shifters to upshift gears, do you have to downshift manually as well or will the DCT do it for you if you don't?
