I recently purchased a set of wheels but now need to swap the TPMS to be compatible with my 2010 model year M3.

My gut tells me to go OEM but my wallet says to seek alternatives.

Anyone with experience with aftermarket TPMS who wants to share the good and bad?

And if you have a line on where to get the best deal I would certainly appreciate that as well!

I bought a winter tire package with TPMS and the tires already installed. They worked for the first two seasons, but this year, especially when colder, I have been getting an intermittent failure from at least one. From what I've been told, the system in our cars listens for each TPMS, and if, after awhile, it never hears from all of them, it declares the whole system is bad (which makes it harder to determine which one(s) are bad). I think this tends to happen if the battery is either bad, or old, or for some reason, it may not turn off when it detects no motion and runs down...the cold doesn't help a battery, either.

So, while the OEM ones in the original tires/wheels still seem to be working fine, I'm probably going to end up replacing those in the winter tires. The company offered to swap them, but I need to pay the labor and to have them rebalanced.

Depending on the year, at least if you believe some of the websites, the difference in price at those discounters between an OEM one and an aftermarket one (may even be made by the same company) ranges from $20-30 each (and most are about 1/2 of the OEM ones from the dealer).

Certainly, if you should have a problem, having OEM ones in there, if it became a warranty issue, would be much smoother sailing. The dealer wanted over $700 to swap out the existing sensors for OEM ones. I took it in, because the error message said 'TPMS Receiver Problem', and I mistook that for being what it said...not that it could not hear one or more of the sensors any longer.

Tire Rack sells TPMS made by the OEM manufacturer (HUF formerly Beru). I suggest buying them from tire rack. It's the same product at a lower price.

I installed the tire rack sensors this year... saved a lot of $, and they work just the same...

tire rack sells them for a good price. bought many sets for different wheels

I got "OEM TPMS Sensons" from ESS for around $225-$250 (don't quote me on that), and they have worked perfectly since the second they were installed. Ive actually never had low air pressure so in about 1 year they have been working nicely.

Beru's tpms business was acquired by HUF so anything new will typically be labeled HUF not Beru.

Same part, different branding. Eventually all will say Huf, but there are probably some that say Beru floating around.
