Mini Cooper S ain't slow...

Ok, I was on my way home from work few days ago. I was cruising down the highway around 70mph and there was a royal blue MCS (not sure if it’s turbo or s/c; turbo replaced the s/c in 2007) that was glued to my butt. I sped up to 80-85 and so did he. I was like eff it and popped to 5th and brought it to a 100mph. I guess I might have underestimated the 4 banger. I think I only pulled a 1 CL on him at that point. I wasn’t too satisfied with the result and slowed down back to 80. I popped to 4th this time and went up to 125. This time I had 4-5 CL on him….

I have a stock 335 and I am not sure if his was JCW tuned or not. All I want to say is that how in the earth some of you 335ers said “smoke”, “walk” or “eat” other higher powered cars on the highway? In my mind, I would only use the words above if the other car couldn’t see my taillight. Given the MCS weighs at 2546lb vs 3340lb on the 335, it might have a weight advantage. However, doesn’t the 4 banger need to work a lot harder after 100+?

Now my question is: Was I in the wrong gear or may be I should have shifted to 3rd while I was at the 80mph mark? I am not saying the 335 is slow but I thought I don’t have to try that hard ….

It was more than likely modded. There are tons of things to do to the MCS that will make that lil' rascal quick. I have had mine about 4 months now. No turbo mods yet. I have played around with higher HP cars and stuck with them. And yes, mine does drop some growl in the higher MPH range. Lowered mine and it carves like a scalded cat in the twists.
Gotta love the 28.4 mpg in the city.

A Mini Cooper S has great pickup from 0-80mph. The reason he stuck with you on the first run is because you were in the wrong gear, and he was likely in the meat of his powerband. The second run in 4th gear is more representative of what both cars are capable of when running WOT.

I have a 2007 Mini Cooper S (supercharged convertible) with an intake and 15% pulley, and it can easily outrun a stock RSX type S. The mods probably put the little beast at 210 crank hp? Haven't dynoed it, and probably never will. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear pull extremely well! Easily the most fun car to zip in and out of traffic in.

Hey buddy, what is a 15% pulley? Typo? I guess you have a crank and s/c pulley modified?

Sorry, been posting on the mini forums. It's a modified s/c pulley, 15% reduction.

+1 on the more than likely modded

dropping into 3rd at 80 wouldve definitely helped but you'd only stay in that gear for half a second before redlining at WOT

Check your badging, I think you've got the 328, not the 335.

u should get in the habit of downshifting to 3rd gear on freeway, not 5th. funnest gear 335 has IMO.

my neighbor's MCS put 250 hp to wheels. it was quick but i beat him with procede V1 he bowed to me lol

If only the Mini was RWD... it'd be perfect. The torque steer, once you mod it, gets pretty nasty.

^Yup. Even with Eibachs, which helped.

Played with a Vette the other day. I think one side of the car came off the ground a smidge. He backed off some before entering the curve. My butt puckered for the next hour. I now know the limits though.

Basically, the car got squirrely coming out of a sharp corner. This in turn gave me strange feelings.

Kind of the same feeling you get, at least I do, when you peek over the edge on a really high building/bridge etc...

I will be picking up my 08 Mini Cooper S Hardtop next week..I have to tell you that car is FUN!!! And it sure does scoot (haha!) from low speeds. My 335 will mollywhop it on the highway, but who cares..the MCS will mollywhop the 335 in the corners. All depends what you want. Both AWESOME cares in their own way. I'll put up a review soon as i get it.

Congrats! I really enjoy mine. It get's twice the city mpg as my Titan which is great for my pocket. I was looking at the M3's that came in and the Mini lot had a SOLD tag in almost every one. Times be a changing.
