I can't tell since my car is super loud. We've installed solid subframe bushings and street diff bushings and you can hear a SLIGHT diff whine and that's about it. As for the cf drive shaft I don't think it'll make anymore noises.

Crushed my best MRLS time this weekend (1:44.54 Euro MDM) with traction control off. MDM intervenes way too much here.

Went to Speed District's Big Willow day. The forecast had been threatening rain, but it was BEAUTIFUL!
E90 M3 Track/course: Big Willow Springs Best Lap Time: 1:27.50 (transponder) Brakes: AP Racing - Cobalt Friction XR2 front/XR3 rear Tires: BFGoodrich R1S 285/30/18 square on Apex Arc-8 10.5" (tires on 2nd day) Suspension: JRZ RS Pro Other mods: VF620, RD Sport front sway bar, car is gutted with full roll cage, APR 67" GT-250 wing, carbon lip, APR front splitter, Akrapovic X-Pipe, exhaust: straight through with resonators, Recaro Pro Racer halo seat, Euro-MDM on. I have never driven with R1S tires at Big Willow. I wanted to get a baseline time with them with Euro-MDM on since that's what I'm familiar with. I really like the R1S tires. They just feel good on my car. I also drove with DSC-off, but kept getting caught in traffic, so I don't have any good times to report with DSC-off. Plus, I had to cut the day short because I needed to get back home. So, results with DSC-off will have to wait. MDM definitely does not like the Turn 3/4/5 combo when you're trying to go fast. It's just unhappy there. Anyway, I haven't been to Willow Springs in 5 months, and this PR was my first hot lap of the day. I was definitely rusty going through Turns 3/4/5 on my first hot lap, but the overall result was good. Ultimately, I did three laps in the 27's: 1:27.5, 1:27.7 and 1:27.8. The slower 27's had better sectors on the first half of the track than the PB lap since they happened later. After looking at the AIM data, it's clear that I can clean up my driving quite a bit. I have no doubt that better results are possible. I just don't get to Big Willow that often so it's hard to get into the groove there. Oh yeah, and I caught up with a raced out Lambo at the end of the lap, so I let the video run a bit longer than usual after the finish line so we can admire it's highlighter-ness. Here's the video: |

i was having a lot of trouble with my 3-4-5 rhythm yesterday as well. i was really screwing up in the braking zone at the bottom of 5. my braking wasn't quite right and it was throwing off the balance of the car in the transition to turn left and head to 6. the transition was rough and cost a lot of time heading into a long part of the track. and it all starts with turn 3... thats what i love about willow springs- appears to be simple, but complicated to master.

The speeds these cars get to in 8 is just nuts. To think the instructors all thought the E36M3 was going to kill them when I started in 1995! One suggestion: when you haven't been to a track for a while, use the first session to sloooowly build your speed up. Hit your marks, increase speed, hit your marks, increase speed, etc., etc. You may find that when you go out on the second session or at the end of the first session that you are right back on pace (or even faster) than your last time.

The camera is mounted under the left headlight, so it's very much like the driver's position. So, when it looks like I'm getting too wide in 9, I'm really not because the camera is basically at the left edge of the car. There's probably another 3 feet of track to the left of the car on that lap. I wasn't on the edge there at all. I am very well versed with straightening the wheel if you drop 2 wheels. I call it "owning it". If you're gonna go off, own it. Don't save it. At Buttonwillow, I have had to own it many times. Anyway, I understand your comment about building speed at a track you haven't visited for awhile. Quite often, I do my best time of the day in the 2nd session. However, I've been to Big Willow many many times. And before I go to a track I watch my videos a bunch of times to get me back in the mental groove. On Sunday, once I got out on track, I was feeling very comfortable out there---the car felt great, and the weather was perfect, the track surface felt good, so I decided to got for a solid hot lap. The result was better than I expected. When I look at the video, if I ignore the speedometer, the car looks poised and in control to me. I don't see any freak out moments at all. On this particular lap, Euro-MDM was on, so I had a safety net there as well. My last 7 track days have been pushing very hard at Buttonwillow with DSC-off. This lap at Big Willow, with MDM on, felt quite relaxed by comparison. After looking at the data, I'm convinced the car can do a 1:25.x without any trouble. I'm not sure I will ever do that, but I know the car can do it. On my AIM Solo DL, I split Big Willow into 4 segments. Using the best segments from my 3 laps at 1:27.x to assemble a Virtual best, the AIM said my Virtual best was 1:26.6. (I ran the first half of the track better later in the morning.) And that's with MDM on. I'm quite certain that turning traction control off will pickup more than .5 seconds. When I turned traction control off at Buttonwillow, I picked up 2.5 seconds. The fastest I could achieve at Buttonwillow 13CW with MDM on was 1:51.5. When I turned DSC-off, I was able to get to 1:49.0. So, I'm quite sure that with more consistent driving and DSC-off, the car is capable of more. And even at a 1:27, with these tires, it's nice to know that there's still a solid margin in the car. I'm not driving it at it's hairy edge. So my ultimate interpretation of all of this is that, as usual, this car is waiting around for me to get my act together! I think my car is bored with me . |

Took my car out for the first event of the year. MFBA at Road America, always a great track with a great group. It was a little cold and gloomy, but I was able to get two sessions in on street tires and about 1 and a half of the Pirellis before the rain started.
Here is my fastest in my street tires (just Bridgestone S-04) at a 2:43.53 Here is my fastest on the Pirellis. 2:37.11 with a bit of traffic. Amazing what some sticky tires will do! |
