Or better yet, if this happens again, drive it straight to the dealer, if you can, so they can see the problem before it goes away.

This has happened on my car on more than one occasion. You are correct in saying that restarting the car fixes it most of the time though.

Best of luck to you getting BMW to do ANYTHING... I fear they are scared of their own invention. My DCT car has been nothing but a mess.

If a simple re-start fixes this, it sounds like another software bug.

Add me to the list

I got the same message on the way home from work today in my 2011 e93. Started after a hard stop and would only go into gears 1,3,5. After a restart car was fine. Should I bring it in?

I think you should... the more of us show that a problem exist, the sooner BMW has a fix. Hopefully.

I have to disagree with waiting and seeing what happens. I know its a pain, but the more documentation you have showing you keep going back for the same problem, even if they can't duplicate it, the better your case will be if you should need to lemon the car.

Well, 700 miles now, and the car is back in the dealership for the transmission malfunction.

While driving at 30mph, we lost 1,3,5 and R... drove it straight to the dealer, again. They saw the message this time. We never turned the car off. Told them we didn't feel safe in the car anymore, and they better find what's wrong with it.

The constant is that we lose 1,3,5,R and not the other clutch. Some lose 2,4,6. We'll see what they say this time.

Let me know what they say. I am taking mine in 7/19 for the same exact issue.

Thanks.

I've been here for a while, and other than programming issues, haven't read anything this serious about DCTs. And rather than showing up on 'old' cars with some mileage, seems to be a problem with new cars with less than 1K miles. Maybe a bad clutch batch?

I don't own a DCT so don't follow these threads closely, but is this a widespread DCT problem (VW, Audi, etc), or just BMW? Hope the former. I was going to buy a VW CC as a daily driver, but found out they're only made with DCT now, I passed. Hopefully DCT will prove itself since it's a great tranny. Good luck folks.

Just called BMW of NA to document the DCT problem. Probably a good idea for everyone with this problem to do the same.

They laughed me off the phone... But they are also very aware of my issues.

UPDATE,

Still at the dealer, they are considering a complete transmission replacement. They are waiting to hear from BMW NA.

They are still claiming this is unique issue with our car. No other reported cases...

More to follow.

BMW will continue to deny and be unable to reproduce your problem and then you will become an annoyance to them as I did with my DCT until BMW NA basically tells you oh well.... Refer to DCT problem thread. I now drive an AUDI.

Sounds like you have a good dealer. That makes the difference in so many of these cases.

Update: the dealer says there is too much pressure on one of our clutches, so we need a whole new transmission. No spare transmissions in the USA and no spares in Germany! On Monday, the dealer will give us an estimate as to how long it will take for us to receive and install one. It could be weeks without our M3. This sucks.

Ouch sorry to hear that. I hope they give you a M3 loaner at least . I hope they figure all this out before the September productions start. It would really suck if you had to wait through August since the factory shuts down.
