Yea i was just at a Thai restaurant in Los Angeles (sanamluang) and i saw a White M3 with Akyrm front bumper and large round sticker looks likes an MFEST member, right off he started the car it made the sound... now i dont feel too bad i actually heard it on someone else's car. LOL

Thanks but i really hope they find it. i know its normal since everyone is stating that it is, but to be honest i really just want them to find out the cause. just an FYI i guess.

This is the 3rd time i brought it in with the same problem. so hoping this time they actually diagnosed the issue.

Ill do another thread if it they do find out the cause.
IF they find it. If they do, it will have to happen more than that one time to diagnose it. At this rate, your car could be there for a long time. Highly doubt the dealership will let the car sit there that long considering you have brought it in before and they told you it is not a problem.

That's exactly right in this case man . It's like complaining about the clutch chatter or crackling brakes (or any other normal noise). If all other cars make them, no dealer is going to do anything about it (unless abnormally loud), whether they know the cause or not. You're being extremely OCD about it. I'm a little anal myself, but worrying about that is just crazy man. Curious? Yes. But worried? Naaah. Relax, and enjoy your car .

True, like i said brought the car in for another reason, but hey whatever it is hope they do find the issue or replace.. the car should not make the sound in the first place anyways. normal or not.

nah i am anal and to be honest id thought id mentioned it since i was in for service for a different thing...

for a 70k car i have hard time of taking it in that this shit is normal..... ive own other cars and even on my friends porsche he says hes never heard that noise in hes car... but i hope its normal, but then again not ALL M3 makes that sound.

Certain cars have certain mechanical noises, especially high performance cars.

The car will make whatever sounds it will, and truthfully if one doesn't like it, then one must deal with it in whatever way that may be.

Like someone else said, that's like complaining about the clutch noise, or the driveline noise, or even saying the car is too loud on start up because most other cars do not do it.

There is nothing to fix on your car, especially replace.

A personal suggestion I tell a lot of people who love their cars is that the more we nit pick and the more we worry, the less we will enjoy the car. I understand if a rock hits the car and scratches it, that's entirely different, but I am more referring to things that aren't caused externally.

Sorry for the philosophical ending.

Problem is they don't make it all the time man. This car has more extraneous noises (at first) than any other car I've owned. But if you're mechanically inclined, you know which noises to deem normal and which ones problematic. Furthermore, if something is not right, IT WILL GET PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. And that's the gauge to use before even bothering with a dealer. Even if you took the car for another issue, I don't like to give dealers the excuse to potentially abuse my car trying to duplicate something I can't. You need to understand how warranty works: can't duplicate an issue? There's no problem.

Do I like it? No. Does the fact that all (or most) other cars have the same noise(s) makes it right? No. But that's the reality. Many times is a bad design that may or may not cause any issues (like the idle valve), but won't be fixed unless it's proven defective. Others is a compromise between NVH and performance engineers have to make, like the dual vs single-mass flywheel, performance-oriented vs quieter valvetrain, etc.

Finally, I've experienced many times another reality, which is that when trying to fix something stupid, like a rattle, I ended up with additional problems due to bad reassembly of parts, not to mention scratched leather/panels/console that conveniently 'was there' when car was dropped, when car was perfect when dropped off. So I learned that unless my car has an issue I can't resolve, can't live with it, could be detrimental to the car, and too expensive to eat it out of pocket, THEN that's when I reluctantly take it in. This is something anal people, like you, need to keep in mind . Good luck man.

hot oil engine flush

I have a "popping" sound when i start my car. its louder when its so cold out. it only pop once. went to bmw service and they said i need a hot oil engine flush because its too humid last year here in Alberta that moisture got into my crank case (its a sealed unit). I still have warranty and they said its not covered.

FYI, I changed 2 things that seemed to have helped, so I can't point out which one is which. I had the loud clank for sure, but then switched to a lighter oil (Mobil1 0W40) and switched to a different tune by BPM.

Issue is more or less gone. And if it does make a sound, it's maybe 1/4 as loud.

I hear a loud click about 30 sec after switching off the car. It's like something is disengaging ... any idea? It has been doing for a while.

I think the loud click you heat ay start up is coming from the vanos ... solenoid valve related. BMW dismissed as normal and the age of the car. There is another thread on this subject.

Is this the sound op?

Malek's explanation seems very viable. I've heard this on at least 3 other E9X M3's in person, and on youtube exhaust start up vids, etc. It's common.

Get it documented while under warranty for some peace of mind.

I just realized that this thread is from '11. Guess if the noise hasn't become something serious since then we're all in good shape.

Let's hope so. My car exhibits the same, after sitting for a week or so. Sometimes it does it after shorter periods. I will continue to monitor the situation to see if persists. 19k on the odo.
