Solid state hard disk drives compared to the M3

I am researching solid state drives to replace the hd in my laptop. On newegg's site for the OCZ vertex 120gb there are several good comments. This one is hilarious and I just had to share:

Quote:
Cons: None of your Firewire800 RAID tanks will keep up with it. It takes a Fiber Channel rack of SAS drives to accept data externally as fast as it can read. There's nothing for your hater friends to "ya, but" about in this SSD...they'll probably get jealous and insult other things (like, maybe, "You're a tool for buying that new M3 when I changed out all the internals in my Altima, twin turbocharged it, remapped the ECU, bored it out and put in custom pistons, and got a massive, obnoxious 4in exhaust, and now I run low 14's an embarrassing economy car...haha...you look like a fool to spending all that money for a car that's usually only a second and a half quicker to the end of the track"...or something like that...lol...at a university, that's what jealous guys talk about when women aren't even realistic enough for them to discuss :-D). Ya...not many cons thusfar.

Lol! Too bad my baby hasn't got a hard drive to upgrade. Just out of interest why do you want to go SSD and not a larger 5400 / 7200 rpm?

The latest generation of SSD drives are much faster. They not only rival but beat 10,000 rpm drives. They are quiet, have no moving parts and therefore are sturdier. But, they cost a lot more and aren't available in as large a size as spinning hard drives. Yet.

P.S. when you say "my baby" are you talking about a computer? Or your M3? I ask this because '08 M3s don't have a hard drive but '09s do. And I haven't heard of a computer (not since the early 80's anyway) without a hard drive.

Verdict is still out on how long those memory on the drive can last compare to the drives.
Quote:
For the past three years, consulting firms and others have raised questions about the ability of NAND flash memory to handle large number of "writes" over time, more commonly known as the NAND write limitation issue. These questions raise concerns about the reliability, cost and durability of flash memory and solid state technology in general as it becomes more popular for enterprise systems.

I mis-read your post and thought you wanted to upgrade the hard drive in your M3 to an SSD, hence the question!

P.S. Of course I was referring to the M3! Had it since November 2007!

Yes, I bought the very first E92 M3 in the country, three months before it was officially launched here!

People who aren't into cars think "It's just another BMW" which suits me just fine. Those who DO know are very appreciative. Just last night I gave a bunch of guys a real thrill (I think they were thrilled, they were cheering!) by taking off pretty quick from where they were standing!

Pics...

That must have cost you an arm and a leg! It's great to see the home land representing! Man, it costs a lot less for us in North America to own an M3, we are pretty lucky over here. Do you ever get scared driving your E92 with the bad roads in some places? What do you do in Mumbai? My wife's uncle used to work at the Taj that was attacked, I remember taking a tour of all the suites and thinking how beautiful that hotel was. It's such a terrible shame what happened.

We are planning on coming to India again in a year or two, I'll have to look you up!

SSD's are in their infancy but they're already improving rapidly. I just bought an Intel X25-M as my boot/applications drive; I'm really excited to see how it performs.

It is many times more expensive here to buy an M3, sadly. Car takes the roads pretty well, that's the biggest plus point vs other sports cars.

Sorry for Ersin.

I hear the new 1TB SSDs are supposed to be amazingly fast.

Wow, I haven't heard of any 1TB SSDs available yet. I'll have to do some more research.

Read this article on SSD, extremely informative. The net is that the only drives worth buying right now are from intel.

And the Intel ones are still not a surefire bet. They degrade over time and you need to "reboot" the SSD so to speak.
