3rd scheduled maintenance around 45k miles
Debating if I should actually go into the dealer or just handle it myself. Looking at the manual, it looks like some things that could be costly might be due like the diff fluid. I've gone to the dealer for the 15k oil changes but done changes in between at 7.5k by myself. The only reason that I'm thinking about letting the dealer take this one is this is probably the last free one I'll have. They pissed me off the last time by damaging my car and claiming it wasn't their problem because what they damaged wasn't an OEM thing.
What would you do?

I'm doing all my services for the same reason. Rather pay for fluids than getting my car damaged, or a fluid change done wrong, like it has happened numerous times.
I recently did a tranny and diff fluid changes, along with a full brake/clutch bleed. Bought Royal Purple Synchromax for the tranny and 75/140 Max Gear for the diff. No more crunching behind, and tranny shifts better, so definitely recommended. I'm still using TWS 10/60 during warranty, but will switch soon after that; it's total overkill when not driving the car hard, especially in winter. Good luck man. |

There is a study on about ten diff fluids that you can find with a google search. I'll note that Amsoil paid for it and came out on top although it was supposedly by an independent testing company. The top brands were relatively close, but Royal Purple was not one of them. It did not do very well. After reading it, I changed the RP 75W140 that I had just put in my E36M3 diff. There were also a few anecdotal reports on Bimmerforums of diffs breaking after running RP, but there were only a few, the diffs had all been in use for many years and there was no proof the RP was responsible for the failure -- just suspicion since there had been no issues with other fluids previously.

I'm not a fan of any brand, be it car, bike, oil, gas, etc., but the truth is you can use the cheapest oil you want and if you change it often enough, it shouldn't matter much what you use. I bought RP because that's the only fluid available locally without having to order it. Many different groups swear by it, including the Aston Martin guys, and those cars are not cheap. Reason why I don't give a darn about which oil I use is because I change it every 2 years, with a maximum mileage of 8K miles. I could almost use kitchen oil with those intervals . But if I was going to push the envelope with the OCI, then I'd do a bit more research. But IMHO, with any full synthetic fluid, you can't really go wrong. There might be some better than others, but definitely not a wrong choice IMO. Take care.
