Anybody have a front wheel bearing go bad?
My front left wheel bearing went bad. I noticed more road noise than usual and was thinking maybe a differential or cv joint so I had a shop check it out. The noise just kind of propagated throughout the cabin so it sounded like it was coming from the rear. Anyway, it was very rusty and had lost it's seal. I'm not sure why it was so rusty. I am the original owner, live in a pretty dry climate, and it is garaged, and not driven in winter. Car washes? The right front wheel bearing is not nearly as rusty looking. A few hundred dollars to replace. Anyone else heard of this issue?

7 years old, only 42k miles. No, not a big deal to fix. Just seems odd to me. Left would definitely get more stress for me as most of my favorite corners are right handers, and it's done more than a few track days at PIR which is a clockwise track. Wider wheels, wider tires, bigger brakes, and 10mm spacers all put more stress on it, I understand that, but mechanic agreed it didn't look like that kind of failure. It didn't burn up or overheat, just seemed to rust out.

Some track drivers regrease new bearings with synthetic grease before installing. I have not. Never tracked. But after 7 years, expect some wear in lubricants. A friend rebuilds BMW axles and the grease literally pours out of the boots once the clamps are released.

I had a front wheel bearing go bad.
Bare in mind, in my case it was actually the hub that went bad... Once the shop took it apart, the "lip" of the wheel hub that holds the bearing in place was spliting off. They said it was most likely a defect right out of the factory as they had never seen anything like that before. It was quite rusted so it had most likely been in bad shape for quite some time. Don't recall exact $$ #s but the labor cost wasn't bad. |
