Two Failed Skidpad difting Attempts from the Weekend

I was at summit point WV. I decided to give a shot at drifting in skidpad. turns out i am not ready yet.

I was on the 2nd gear all time with power button off, just couldnt manage to feather the throttle.

your hands WAY too slow.

suggestion: stop with the death grip on the wheel. remember CPR. Correct, Pause, Recover

by the way, nice M gloves

its difficult. ive spent some time on a figure 8 style cones and managing the transitions is tough. also the barrel pressing the nose to it and rotating. takes a lot of practice but fun trying in controlled environment.

Haha I had the same experience yesterday with the CCA at NHMS. It was my first time on the skid pad and my hands were way too slow. We started with a circle then moved to figure 8s. I started to get it a bit by the end of the exercise but its tough. Takes practice just like anything else. Nice helmet!

Hands too slow! Have to anticipate the movement more with the steering, and in conjunction feathering the throttle in and out faster.

Figure 8 is usually lower speed so it is easier to start off with. It is hard though.

if there is anything more humbling than turning off dsc and going to the skidpad, i don't what it is. it really gives you an understanding of how hard it is to control the car with all the nannies off. keep at it, you'll be very satisfied when you get the right result.

Awesome!

Best thing I have ever done in a car, keep going back, then take it to the track.

It took me at least 10 hours of instruction, and I still haven't got it anywhere near the level I am after. I've spun countless times...

Biggest kick ever how ever once you really get cracking (wait till you do a 3rd gear power slide in the dry....Holy sh*t...talk about grin/fear factor all in one...)

I am now working on "linking" ie one way then the other, BTW don't forget how much rubber is on an M3

Google "Overstear" Tiff Neddell when he tootles around in an old english Morris 1000....

It sounds to me like you're completely off throttle when the spins become completely unrecoverable. On a rear wheel driven car, keeping a steady and moderate throttle, and sometimes slightly increasing the throttle may actually keep the rear end from coming around, even when it's throttle that induced the lack of grip in the rear.

It is the fact that you are not ANTICIPATING the spin and once it happens, you jump off of the throttle, that makes the spin unrecoverable. If you watch in-car drift videos, or get some rides with experienced instructors on a skid pad, you'll see (and hear) the throttle go "whaaap-whaaap-whaaap" like they're quickly modulating it AND the hand go opposite direction as soon as the spin is initiated...Sometimes even BEFORE the spin starts.

Good for you! Keep at it, it just takes time. I had a tough time getting it but it feels great when you do. Lots of great advice here, softer and quicker hands will help for sure. I had more success early on in first gear, but I'm in a 6MT so... Also, it sounds to me like you're coming way off the throttle when the back starts to go. I was able to start catching it when I got back into the throttle as the back came around.

If you really want to try it, drop by my place and I'll let you drive my S2000. It's actually more difficult NOT to drift it than it is to try to drift it. In fact, it's easier to drive in donuts than it is to make a right hand turn...

OP, that surface seems way too slippery. Try it on a dry skidpad.

Strange. I was taught the complete opposite at Skip Barber. We did a whole day of drifting via trailbraking and trailing throttle oversteer and the first thing to do to recover from oversteer is to get full opposite lock on the wheel while getting off the gas. Once the car is pointed in the right direction you start giving some gas get the wheel pointed straight. Someone with good car control will obviously do things a bit differently to keep the car at a nice slip angle, but I'm pretty sure the last thing you want to do when oversteering out of control is to give any more gas.

You need an instructor to ride with you.

Next time try this... don't try feathering the throttle - bring it up to speed and a little more and hold it... then focus on your hands... just hold the throttle and leave it and use the wheel to correct and manage the car.

Just looks like you were a little slow correcting. I know how frustrating it gets when you keep spinning out LOL
