M3 vs X5M
I know this will be a bit biased from me because I went with the X5M when searching for a new BMW three months ago but I don't think it's been compared enough. Thoughts? (I wish I was a member on bimmerpost before I bought the X5M, might've changed my mind but I'm loving the X5M!) The biggest plus to the X5M is its all around performance because the weather in St. Louis, MO where I live is crazy, we had snow today. In an M3 I can't go from 0-60 in 4.5 in this weather whereas in the X5M I just did and it's raining.

I like the X5M, although I've never driven one can't talk about the drive. Speaking about the obvious practicalities of the car, considering where you live X5M is the better choice. It gives performance and in the end competes with Cayenne turbo's and Benz's AMG's. It's also awesome because all you need is a tune to make it crazier.
Don't know how else to compare to an M3 except you're essentially comparing car vs. suv (sav if you wanna be picky). |

Dunno about the X5m, drove the X6m the other day its a monster, I loved it. Actually I don't know if u can compare it to the m3, they are two different worlds, it isn't half involving as the m3. IMO u can own both at the same time and each one would give u a totally different driving experience.

One of the car magazines, maybe Bimmer, tracked some of the faster, late model BMWs. Included were the X6M and the E9xM3. The article said the X6M might have turned the fastest lap time of the day, but unfortunately the times were not listed. I was curious. Sometimes massive brakes, massive power, and AWD can offset 1000 lbs of extra pork, at least for a while.

Stock vs Stock and X5/6 M should not beat an M3 on any level. The M3 has more horsepower per ton and is more nimble in the corners. Evidence to this is the 19 second difference between the 2 cars on the ring.

The X6M should draw even with an M3 to 60 but after that its the M3 all the way. The X6M ran a similiar ring time to the E46 M3.

So I guess your saying that the Porsche line is dead as well since they make an over weight pig of a turbo car that has all four wheels spinning at the same.... AND IS AN SUV? Car manufatures that do not evolve with the current trends......... FAIL!!! Despite what your personal opinions are. I personally think the X5M and X6M are as useless as a Dodge Ram SRT-10..... but there is obviously a market for them all. The things that make the free world go round and round.

I can see how the X5/6M might get out of the corners better and outaccelerate the E9xM3 at lower rpm enough to equal or better the E9xM3 on some tracts. For handling, AWD traction and steamroller tires help offset weight. For acceleration, it is torque that drives the car, and the twin turbo V8 M engine has plenty of it. Instead of doing horsepower per ton, do torque per ton. Calculate the effects of gearing on both the X5/6M and the E9xM3, if you think it is worth the exercise.
The article did not provide specifics, so the times might have been close either way. And it simply suggested the X6M might have been faster, without conclusively saying so. I found that disappointing. I'll try to find the article so you know the track and which car it might favor. EDIT -- October 2010 Bimmer Magazine; test was at New Jersey Motorsports Park. I let my M3 go for an X5M and I don't miss the M3 at all. The X5 M is that good and it admits that it is heavy.
The M3 is at best an overweight GT with a really nice V8 that weighs 500+ pounds too much. The X5M is crazy good at going fast both in a straight line, in cornering and braking. It is more comfortable than the M3 and about as sporting.......Steve

also, the X5M may be about as sporting as any car should be within the confines of public roads, but that's far from the truth on the track (where it's not even close to an M3). |

You are absolutely correct sir........... however..... Driving a car at its limits entails a certain amount of danger. If I was to break loose and crash, I would much rather be in the fatter... safer M3.

I just replaced a 2008 Cayenne GTS with a new Cayenne S. It is a quantum step forward. The old one was great but I am truly amazed by the new one.
