Yep. I had a 98 and after that the hit of a 4 stroke liter bike felt tame.

I have been think/dreaming about this exact comparison. Not in their respective cars but dropped into a E46 M3 track/race car (which I already own). A M3 GTR if you will. I love the S65 in my E92 but am afraid the S62 would win out for max hp, torque, reliability and would cost less to build and operate.

More power and torque, yes, unless you get the S65 sleeved to 94mm which I am not sure is practical. VAC would probably know. I am not sure about reliability either.

As far as cost - if you are really thinking about an application near max hp, cost differences are probably negligible.

One advantage of the S65 is the DCT which would take effort to mate to an S62. Of course if you are going with an MT it's not important (I would never build a track car with a third pedal but I can understand that some prefer it).

Someday I'd like to build a track car with a short stroke M60 or M62 @ about 4L with around 400hp. No VANOS. A poor man's S65 if you will. The issue is the trans as mentioned above. Maybe a six speed SMT would be best.

Well it is just a thought at the moment. I would have to find the right people to help make it happen. I believe there would be more fabrication and customization than anyone could imagine. engine, trans mounts, electronics such as ABS, etc...... More than anything it just has not been done very often so you get to pay for you mistakes.

I know Drenth builds a DG500 specifically for the S65 but would guess it is 15-20K. Not only that but one would need to understand how much a rebuild costs and how many hours in between rebuilds. Porsche seq gear boxes are only 30-40 hours I believe. So unless you have a big race budget you might be stuck with a MT. I am unsure what box is typically mated to the S62 and would think the DCT would not be reliable, easy to rebuild nor cost effective.
The lower power of the S65 might allow less modification of the existing components........I would rather not throw away my $4300 diff nor blow it up.

What did it take for Turner Motor Sport to shoe horn the S62 into an E63 M6?

I want my car to be bomb proof not a bomb. I am talking endurance racing and a supercharged S65 would be scary expensive. In addition it would not be much fun to blow up in 2-3 hours and still have hours to go.

Maybe the M6 was a tube frame front end also? Just guessing.
