BMW Connected App

Does anyone have the BMW Connected app in their car? Do you find it handy (i.e checking e-mail and so forth)?

Is this app just downloaded from iTunes or does BMW have program something to the car in order for it to work?

Thanks!

App is available from iTunes. You have to have BMW Apps in your car to be able to use it.

I don't have it in my car. Do you know if the software can get added after the fact and is it worth it?

Yes, you can have someone add Apps to the car. Is it worth it? That's more of a personal question. What may be worth it to me may not be worth it to you. With Apps you can view your calendar, twitter, facebook, pandora, mog and stream music.

There is no checking email - calendar yes. The app is in the iTunes store and does require you have option 6NR or a third party hack. I find it limited by its requirement to have a wired connection to the car to use any of the apps (and a cradle for the video out functions). If the apps were available via BT, I would use them more.

Reading email and SMS on iDrive is supported only by BlackBerries because RIM developed a custom Bluetooth profile to allow this data to be transmitted. Apple doesn't support it, so it's Apple's fault, not BMW's.

OP, I don't find Connected to be that helpful myself. Last mile navigation might come in handy depending on where you are, and Web radio I'm told is nice. However, I do enjoy BMW Apps for the Pandora control -- although I find myself just using BT audio streaming on shorter trips in the car out of laziness. Doesn't allow you to navigate your library (only next/previous song, also due to a feature that iDrive supports but Apple doesn't), but it works well enough.

Now this is weird.... I've read in several posts that the BMW Apps allows Pandora and MOG. However, I don't get those. Here are the only BMW Apps I see (just downloaded the latest version from iTunes)

Web radio (pretty decent)
News (RSS feeds; I sort of like this one)
Twitter (who cares if I stop to get petrol?)
Facebook (mmmmm. slightly useful)
Last Mile (haven't tried it)
Calendar (works pretty good)
Wiki Local (during a long trip from PCD, this was interesting to find out info in the small towns I stopped at for petrol).

Oh, and in Europe, they have something else called BMW Link. Too bad we're not seeing that in North America, yet.

It's because Pandora and MOG can't operate at the same time that you're running apps. As soon as you start Pandora/MOG via the phone they will appear in the apps section on the car.

correction
Blackberry did not develop it
it's a standard Bluetooth profile

From what I've read, Blackberry has some exclusive contract with BMW over the email. Don't now when it expires.
I just wish they made an app for Spotify. They have MOG already, which is pretty similar, but Spotify seem to have a larger library.

As the above poster mentioned, these aren't in BMW Connected. They're supported by the BMW Apps feature in the car, i.e. when you start Pandora or MOG on your phone and connect to the car, they'll know how to work with it and put up an interface on iDrive. But yes, while those are running you can't access the features available in BMW Connected. That too is an Apple limitation in terms of background task restrictions.

Thanks, THE_TECH and jphughan. I'll go try that in about an hour!

I find BMW apps fairly useless in general. The only one I use regularly is pandora, but again it's awkward since the app must be in the foreground on your phone to listen to the music in the car. No support for background apps? In 2012? C'mon.

+1

That was my understanding as well. Explains why there is a functional calendar/appointment integration with BMW apps via the iPhone but not email.

It's not sold by BMW so there's no official price, but if you search these boards for 6NR Retrofit you'll find a few vendors who offer unofficial setups.

Just got my apps installed by onemofo (on the board) took him 10 minutes! I love the apps feature. You can now get your news and wiki on there.
