OEM PS2 vs regular PS2
My dealer says that the Michelin PS2 for BMW are different than the regular PS2 that one can buy from any tire shop, and that the BMW PS2 have depicted a star on the side wall, while the regular PS2 don't have the star (I checked mines and they have a star on them).
Other than the star on the side wall, is there any difference between the PS2 for BMW and the regular PS2, I mean performance, noise, traction, etc...?? Of course the dealer would like to charge me an extra 700 euro for a set of four PS2 for BMW.

I would be inclined to call BS on this BUT there could be a difference. Car&Driver has an article about how to read the sidewall of a tire and this is pulled from that link:
"12.) ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT (OE) MARKING: These letters—or a symbol—indicate that this is the automaker-specified version of a tire that came as a car’s original equipment. These tires can often be a very different blend of rubber compound compared with the off-the-shelf variety of the same tire, even though the tread pattern is identical. Examples of OE markings: General Motors—all have a TPC SPEC number; BMW—most have a five-pointed-star symbol; Mercedes—some are emblazoned with “M0”; Porsche—all have the letter “N” followed by a number, i.e., N1, N2, etc." Again I don't think there is a difference in this case but I don't know for sure. We need someone like Lemans to jump in here and clear this up.

I think there is a difference. I got twice as much mileage (20k) out of the BMW factory PS2s as I did with my previous two sets of PS2s (8k miles on the RS6 and 12k miles on my e46 M3).

As a matter of fact, my M3 rides so nice on the OEM PS2 that I am ready to pay the extra 700 Euro for a set if I know for sure they are different than the off the shelf versions.

Call michelin and confirm that they are indeed different. Just because it has an OE stamp, doesn't mean the specs are different.

there's a 92 style and a 101 style. Something around those numbers. One means that It has more padding around the tires. The 101 are the ones w/t the more padding but nothing crazy.. Go back to BMW and tell him that If he tries ripping you off that you're going to stand in front of the dealership and scream "these cars and lemons".. LOL
and then show him your

No real need to by from the dealer, however getting the correct spec PS2 will improve the ride/handling of the car.
No all PS2 are created equal. See specs below pulled from Tire Rack. My guess is the extra load rating is a result of stiffer side wall. 245/40ZR18 (93Y) SL BMW 220 AA A 1433 lbs. 245/40ZR18 (97Y) XL AO (Audi) 220 AA A 1609 lbs. I know when purchasing off road tires for my land rover, Going with the lowest load capacity tire (while still being higher than the Max GVW) results in a much smoother ride off highway. Basically extra flexibility in the tire adds to the overall suspension of the truck. |

I ran into the same thing today when looking for new tires, and consequently looking for an answer as well.

Load Ratings
There is a difference in PS2s due to load ratings. Get the load rating that is designed for the car. Tirerack is very good about identifying this. If you get a different load rating you will likely get a stiffer or softer ride which could affect handling and ride.

Car is designed to carry a wide load range. As long as the tires are rated for the highest load (up to GVWR) you're going to carry, they'd be fine.
Almost any tire is going to exceed our M3's rating anyway, so the issue is not to buy a tire for more load than the car was designed to carry IMO, like the example of a few posts above. Most of us will never reach remotely close to GVWR capacity. Take care. |

Star on sidewall on PS2 shipped from tirerack
I thought I'd resurrect this thread. I just slapped on a set of PS2s from the tirerack and they have the star on the sidewall. So the dealer star story is BS.

You just have to order the BMW specific model. It's only a couple of bucks more expensive. The better question is what the hell is the difference, and if anybody can notice it . I bet it's just the higher load rating, which for me wouldn't make any difference (never more than 2 light people inside). Take care.

I was going to suggest the same thing as this was what I have found with Contis and Dunlops in the past.

The difference is that you have used a tyre supplier that orders the correct PS2s for an M3 because these tyres ARE different to a regular PS2. Whether they are identical to the tyres supplied to BMW themselves is debatable.

hey the difference between the OEM PS2s and the aftermarket PS2s are that the OEMs are run flats, the aftermarket ones aren't...thats why the OEMs are also more expensive

Yeah my dealer told me they were run flats too.. I was like eh PS2 run flats? I assume what the dealership meant is that the "star" PS2 is specially designed so we can use that mobility gel in our trunk.

The OEM PS2s are NOT run flats. Michelin actually made some changes to the regular PS2 specifically for the M3, and that goes beyond usability with the mobility kit. How noticeable these changes are and if they're for better or for worse (i.e. more understeer) is debatable.
Best regards, south
