My VF620 supercharger review
This review has long been overdue...I would like to thank Nick, Jeff, Paul and Toby of VF Engineering and also to Tom and Steve of EAS for their great excellent service during the VF620 installation
Some of you guys remember that I sold my ESS kit last February and purchased the VF620 kit on April. It was a used ESS vt-535 kit that I bought from a friend of mine - It was a really nice upgrade but as other people would have said, you will always want more. People wonder why did I switch to VF even though I didn't have any problems with my previous kit. Back then the VF620 kit, ESS vt-600 upgrade and a used G-power kit were my options...I chose VF because I wanted a supercharger with the highest power output using the 91 octane (I live in CA) and VF's vicinity is close to my place. Reading the reviews from this forum and my tech's feedback after he drove the VF car were also taken into consideration. I do have a lot of respect for VF and ESS and both of their kits run great from my own driving experience. You can't go wrong with any of them but it all comes down to your own preference. Before purchasing the kit, Nick gave me a tour around the VF facility and showed me the uninstalled components of the sc kit. The manifold looks more stock-like in appearance compared to my previous kit with the removeable heat exchanger at the back. I also like the way they put their attention to detail - a good example is when Nick showed me how the diameter of their slicone boost was stepped to minimize the aiflow turbulence towards the manifold. The VF tuning was done in house and it comes with an OBDII cable that connects to my laptop for any future updates. Installation was fast and hassle-free. I never had any complaints and they provided me with daily updates by text throughout the process. Once I started the car, the tach needle was stable on idle - no sputtering nor engine lights whatsoever. The sc whine was mellow and it drove like stock on low rpm's. Now how does the car run? Well I couldn't be happier. There was this big engine roar and you can obviously notice the power increase at higher rpm's compared to my stage 1 kit. Throttle was very responsive and predictable. The acceleraton till redline was very smooth and it wasn't jumpy at all. To be honest, the extra power is quite intimidating behind the wheel. I daily drive this car and I don't always push my car to its limits....but one thing for sure, I'm always aware that there's a 620 crank beast under the hood that can be easily tapped if needed. My car was dyno'ed at EAS and got 548 rwhp and 370 tq via dynojet. It was running on 91 octane with dct transmission and akrapovic evolution exhaust sytem. As long as I can recall, It was 62 degrees outside with 51% humidity on that April night. As fas as gas mileage, having the VF kit did not really affect my mpg. When me and my buddy's non-sc'd M3 were at Vegas, we both had a full tank of gas right before we left for LA. As soon as we arrived at Barstow, I found out that we almost paid the same amount of gas for a full tank. I've had my VF620 kit daily driven for more than 2 months and I'm more than satisfied with it. You just have to be aware at your speedomoter because this kit never fails to tempt you to push the car harder. This is the modification that I truly enjoy the most and is worth every penny. Special thanks to Mark O, Marc T, The Shop @ Culver City and Chris @ MFest. Thanks for reading! Last edited by spotter; 06-26-2012 at 02:30 AM.. |

Nice! It's cool to see the perspective of someone who's owned two differently powered supercharger kits from two different companies.

Could you safely crank up the boost if you had methanol injection?
Are you running cats? Two or four? Factory or aftermarket? Great car. Enjoy!

great read! I had the same concerns and liked the fact VF was in my backyard... but needless to say, I never had issues with my VF620 kit where it would cause me to visit them so I guess that is a good thing

Thanks! I'm not sure about the specifics on adding methanol injection but feel free to ask EAS or VF engineering and I'm sure they'll be more than happy to address that topic. Currently I'm running akrapovic xpipe with high flow cats and resonators.

You're still running the GT4 pipe, correct?
