I know the cameria is a BMW part, but I wonder if it is also compatible with the 09 iDrive? I was also keeping track of the camera install on another post. Thanks for the pics.

Mantis....I can safely assume definetly doable...all parts were ordered through BMW and installed at BMW here in Bamberg, Germany (Autohaus Sperber)...the techs did have their hands full getting it done though...the main problem they told me was that the installation instructions weren't as "complete" as it shouldve been and they went through a lot of trial and error to get it to come out just right...the difficulty probably came of :
1) My car is an '08 US Spec vehicle
2) I was the first one to request to get a back-up camera install in an M3 (the techs have most experience with installs in the X3's, X5's and X6's)
This for me was definetly NOT a DIY...but if youve got someone who knows what theyre doing then go for it...this install has probably been one of the coolest things I've done on the car so far! Let me know if you have any questions and I can ask the techs where I got it done the how's and what's your looking for

The P/N is in the above link, 66 21 0 430 554 ($554 at Tisher) or 66 21 0 412 010 (listed but no price).

I don't think that this part number is for the '09 3 Series as the new HD LCD screen uses a completely different video cable from the < '08 LCD screen.

Genro, can you tell us how iDrive interacts with the camera? Are there any options in the iDrive menu for camera settings? Does the camera only work when you have the reverse gear selected, or can you turn it on at any time? Can you give us some details like that please?

As far as I can see it only activates when I put the car in reverse...I talked to my dealer today and asked him if there was a way to activate it through the idrive and he told me that in european cars if you hold menu down there is an option that comes up for tv, backup camera, front cameras, etc....but when i did that nothing happened...so it looks like i can only activate the camera when i put the car in reverse...i'm taking the car to a couple german guys i know that are pretty tech savy with the european cars and find out if theres a way to activate it other ways...so more to follow ladies and gents...
