Dinan M3 (E9x) Engine Upgrade

Has anyone else heard about much about Dinan's 4.6 Liter V-8 High Performance upgrade? There was an advertisement for it in this months Car and Driver and I have attached the link below...Here are the highlights:

Any thoughts one this issue???? Would anyone here seriously consider dropping this kind of money into an upgraded engine or has Dinan just wasted a whole lot of money on Research and Development?

Yup. We actually have a motor from a 2011 E92 M3 @ Dinan right now. The owner of our dealership wanted his motor with no mileage moded rather then the core exchange that Dinan typically does. It should be back here shortly and will report back after I have driven it. Typically he will drive the car for a couple of months and then sell it.

Just supercharge the stock 4.0 and get more power than the stroked version...then again, imagine the power output of a SC 4.6L Dinan motor.

I asked the same question to Derek Butts, Dinan's GM who told me that the issue with a supercharger is weight to HP. The supercharger weighs so much that many of the horsepower gains are nullified.

I would think weight balance would be the bigger concern.
I would say, add a lightweight exhaust to the stroker and then almost nullify those 45 extra pounds in the nose by cutting at least 30 pounds with the new muffler...

I don't agree with that at all. You may add about 70-90lbs, but will gain over 100-140hp, depending on tune/boost, etc. I've raced (quarter mile) for many years, and the rule of thumb is it takes about 10hp to overcome a 100lb weight gain.

Many of my cars in the past have benefited greatly from Supercharging, and my last project, turbocharging (2003 Cobra with 76mm BB turbo...811hp to the wheels). I guarantee those cars had no problems overcoming that additional weight of turbo's/SC's (My 03 Cobra went from running 12.77 @ 111 stock to 9.87 @ 141 with the Turbo).

IMO, I would take a NA high output motor over a FI motor any time, but I still love the way those FI motors can make that power, especially with a forged bottom end.

Ya, horsepower goes up 50% and weight goes up 1.25% - Totally Nullified.

Overpriced with marginal gains.

Yep, .3 sec. slower to 60 vs stock (C&D M3 ZCP shootout), and about .2 secs slower to the 1/4. It really goes like hell

Dinan told you what?? So how much does a E90/92 supercharger kit weighs? 800 lbs?

Yea I was about to post the same thing. I remember reading the article and being disappointed at the actual gains... I think C&D mentioned it might partially be due to traction issues (no doubt). You would think though Dinan would address the traction issues for $26,000...

We recently did a full S3-R to a e92. It's ridiculously fast and ridiculously expensive...and the customer couldn't be happier.

I'm interested in seeing the future of this engine once it enters their race program.

what do they mean by this?

Special Notes Items normally replaced during an engine exchange (gaskets, fluids, etc.) must be provided by the installer. Suitable core engine must be returned in Dinan engine crate for full core refund

I didn't even realize that ESS is offering Superchargers starting at a 1/3 of the price of this Dinan replacement!

Yea, they have some pretty good set-ups. It's amazing how hard a ESS SC M3 pulls on the Dinan 4.6 upgrade (which costs so much more)

Personally, I'd go with the Dinan. Yes, expensive...but theres a local Dinan dealer 10 minutes away from my house. Better peace of mind knowing that I can drive over to get day by day updates and see what their doing to the car vs. shipping it to another state and leaving it there for weeks and not being able to see whats actually happening to it... (or better yet getting the kit and sending it to a shop that has no clue what their doing to the car x.x)

I personally stay away from forced induction applications in general. I've driven DIY FI Miatas and S2000 that were just full with problems. Just bad experiences I guess

Oh, thanks for the correction

I've had nothing but good experiences with FI. It all depends on how close to the ragged edge you tune the car. Some folks go a bit nuts and have so many reliability issues. Others chose to go with the biggest turbo setup possible and don't get the set-up that is optimal for their car.
