Tire recommendations for the M3

My coupe came with Michelin PS2's but I see they are not rated for snow/winter conditions. Now that I'm leaving California for New York, just wondering if people go with all-weather tires up there for the snow?

And is there anything I can do to protect my car from the salt that does not involve keeping it in the garage all winter?

I use these on my 335 and plan to run them in the winter on my M3 after I pick it up in Oct. Even here in NC, once it gets below 40 my summer tires would lose grip like they were made of plastic.

You should probably have two sets of tires, one for the summer and one for the winter.

I haven't tried the PS2's in the snow, but based on my previous experiences with summer performance tires, I don't think it's going to work well at all. And driving an M3 in the summer with all-season tires is really a waste.

You will need winter tires if you plan to drive it in even cold rain. You'll find that the PS2's will even lose a lot of dry grip in just cold weather. If there is even a dusting of snow on the ground you won't be able to go anywhere safely, I promise I have tested this .

Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 is the BMW OE winter tire and it's one of the best for performance while being capable in light snow. I've had a set on my G35 and I have a set for my Z4M now. I actually got rear ended in a snowstorm in my Z4M by a Jeep that couldn't stop at a light... but I could.

As for salt, just wash the car regularly if you can and don't worry too much. For the outside, try a very durable wax that will stand up to salt like Collinite (885 fleetwax or 475 is what I use, very durable and used on boats also).
