After looking at dozens of M3s in the last two months across the US, I saw only one that looked like it had had a hard life. It had 65,000 on it and it looked like it had been carrying sumo wrestlers around at top speed through a sandstorm all its life. Chipped to buggery, badly worn and filthy leather, suspension looked sagged, and it was several thousand more than the one I ended up with simply because it had less miles. But that was the exception, it's rare to find one that's not clean. I've owned two E36 M3s and an E46 M3 in Australia and they have both been completely bulletproof, had very few issues with them apart from a sensor here or there and the usual wear items like brake rotors etc. As for them being driven hard, I don't think it really happens unless you're on the track, I mean who is pushing these cars to the limit constantly on the road to the point where their life would be considered "hard"? I've just moved to the US and the car I found had all the options I wanted, has no paint chips anywhere (the front bumper assembly was resprayed) and is in great condition. I can't see it costing me $5,000 to $10,000 more than an M3 with half the miles would over the next few years. As for new vs used, I've owned new cars and see the appeal, I'd not bother again though. I considered a new M3 but the "new car feel" is a massive premium for something I'm not that fussed about. |
