iPhone 3GS...worth it?

I am currently a Verizon Blackberry Curve user. I have been wanting to get an iPhone for the longest time but am hesistant for a couple reasons:
-I would have to term my contract early (I think $90 payout if I did it now)
-At&t service quality/reliability (I keep hearing bad things about it)
-I read an article today stating that Verizon and Apple pretty much do have a deal wrapped up and we'll see a Verizon iPhone in Q3 2010 (a worldwide smaller version). I personally don't feel like waiting that long but this is all part of what is holding my decision back.

I've done some math- Including my term fee + cost of phone + contract; after 24 months (same as 2 year contract) I would break even compared to if I stayed with Verizon (I'd be saving $15 a month with att). So I guess it all comes down to Verizon iPhone and att service quality. I think if att service isn't that bad I'll do it. I'm planning on going into the military soon so I won't need a BB for business purposes anymore. Plus the value of the enjoyment.

I guess I'd just like some opinions!!

What do the current iPhone users think?

I think the iphone is alright and really isn't anything to write home about. There are many other phones out there that can do pretty much the same thing. The only reason why iphone is so popular is because it is based off the ipod which was the turn around product for Apple.

I have no comment on the service of either one. One thing I really hate are the recent AT&T commercials with that guy Luke Wilson (?). Verizon said they have 5x more 3G coverage than AT&T. AT&T then comes back with a commercial saying that they cover something like 300 million people. Sure for those that don't pay attention it sounds good but that didn't answer anything about their 3G coverage. They've done their job of covering up their weaknesses but it's getting pretty damn annoying when they hear one point and reply with a completely different one.

I just went from a Storm(gen 1) to a 3gs and it is a world of difference. I think it is worth it if you want more out of your smartphone than just a phone and messaging. The web browsing blows away anything else out there, except for the Droid, which is equally as nice. Have you checked out the Droid? It is with Verizon. Either way, you will be happy with either one over the BB if you are looking for more.

I just got rid of my Bold 9000 and made the switch to the iPhone 3GS. I definitely do not regret making the switch at all, the 3GS is awesome in every aspect.

Sometimes texting can be a pain but the auto correct system is pretty damn accurate. The other thing is the battery life on the iPhone sucks compared to the BB, but that's something you can live with.

All sounds reassuring. I think the only thing I would really miss is the blackberry messenger...free messaging to friends ftw!

The iphone itself is an excellent phone and more. Having to use ATT service to get it = fail.
I was a Cingular/ATT customer for a couple years and would not go back unless they did a major overhaul of their network infrastructure. I'm not exaggerating when I say that almost every call was dropped when I had a 3G phone. Their EVDO was fine and so was the voice before 3G phones. They just didn't implement the network necessary to support the data bandwidth the phones use.

I have Verizon for work and Sprint for personal and I'd take CDMA any day of the week for calls. I don't have a super cool iphone to browse the web but my blackberry is nothing to sneeze at either.

If you want a toy for a phone and don't care about service then go ahead with ATT and the iphone. If you want reliable service stick with Verizon and wait until they have the iphone or something equal.

I got rid of a Bold to get a 3GS a few weeks ago and so far am generally pretty happy. The only things I miss are the push email on the BB (yes I have gpush, but its not the same) and the message waiting light. Everything else the iPhone is far better. I hardly use my laptop any more.

I've had the 2G and the 3G, and I'm currently using the 3GS. I wouldn't go back to either now, having been tainted by the GS. Do it nao.

Basically lets you get any app you want for free. Like Tom Tom GPS which cost $99 bucks for free. Most games all for free. There's also customized apps you can find in Cydia that you won't find in App store that are pretty cool too. Also let's you customize (theme) the look of your phone. The possibilites are endless.

AKA stealing 99 cents from the hard work of developers. Jailbreaking to pirate 99 cent apps is pretty pathetic. I can understand people pirating $700 photoshop software, but stealing a few bucks from hard-working, self-employed independent developers is just sad.

Jailbreaking was a big deal when there were no 3rd party apps on the app store. These days there's not much incentive unless 1) You really want to customize the interface, 2) want to run on another carrier network, 3) want to run a specific app that Apple/AT&T doesn't allow (which aren't that many these days) and 4) Want to steal from hard working developers.

And the people who say the iPhone is just a toy are in complete denial or are completely ignorant. The iPhone platform has come a long way and the 3GS is rock solid and fast. The only bad thing about owning the iPhone is being on AT&T's network.

And for the OP, I'd wait on the 3GS personally. The new generation iPhone will be out this year and pretty sure it's going to have a higher resolution display among other things. I'm betting it will be a much more significant upgrade than the 3G -> 3GS was.

I get what you mean

But jailbreaking opens up a whole new world

It would be VERY hard for me to go on without SBSettings, FCSB, Tab to Unlock, Quick Reply SMS, Categories.... I can go on
These are free apps you get through Cydia that make the phone so much more user friendlily and accessible.

Don't put words in my mouth.

I never mentioned anything about stealing from hard working self employed developers. He asks what's so good about jail breaking and I gave him the gist of it. What he decides to do with the information is all on him.
