Help identify this noise?
My first thought was that this was the belts, but after installing MS underdrive pulleys and new belts it remains. I am now thinking that it could be a tensioner or something coming from the cooling fan? Once the engine is at temperature the sound is completely gone.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: Its annoying loud. Dont have your speakers up too high. Thanks, Woody

I would start with the belt tensioner and rollers, it does not sound like a failing water pump or alternator bearing to me as the noise is more of a squeal than a rattle or grinding. But hard to really tell with out actually seeing it. Good Luck

Holy crap!!!!! Alien or gremlin invasion!!!!. Sounds like a dry ball bearing to me. Try getting some lube on the belt and on the rollers. Also the belt might be slipping. McGee k that everything is align.

I just had the belt and tensioner replaced in my 2011 M3 with 40k km/25k miles.
The sound was the same as yours but only during upshifts under full throttle between 1-2 and 2-3. Everyone thought it was the transmission but they placed an "ear" on the tranny and the motor and identified the problem during a test drive. Apparently the rapid drop in RPM between shifts, combined with a weak tensioner, was causing the belt to slip. Thanks to Canadian CPO for the coverage!

Go to an auto parts store and spend ten bucks on an automotive stethoscope. Whit the engine running, CAREFULLY put the end of the stethescope on the bearing side of each of the items you believe to be the issue. You will DEFINATELY hear the offending part.

This sounds like something with the belt or wear on the axle of the pulley .
