Thanks for your opinions. I might be able to stretch my budget to buy the X5 30d. If not, I'm going to wait for the 9 speed Evoque.

I'm restating again, my daily commute consists of two toll roads and an elevated highway. All three are the best roads in India. The car will be used as a soft roader.

Didn't really read much more of the thread my bad haha. I'd go with the ML in that case

If there's no real need for any sort of off-road capability, I'd go for the X3 (but I don't see how a X3 can be mistaken for a X1 though )
Guess you're not familiar. I'll just leave this here -->http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=U5GbL2NF9Mk

X3 has more clearance, but u get the point. Also - performance wise, the X1/X3 will be blow the doors off the Evoque

The ML250 is just as capable offroad as the Evoque, maybe even more so.

ML for sure. So much more car than the others. A lot more useful...lol at the people picking the the Evoque because it looks "cool". Evoque cargo space is a freaking joke. The Evoque is such a small vehicle. Honestly very disappointed when I went to check them out.

We're a bloody small country that's why

Plenty of bigger options in the LR stable all ready if you need something bigger.

It's designed to be that size for a reason

Listen here, we're 'Merican, and if we could drive the Queen Mary down the 405, lots of us apparently would.

I don't get it, I'm 6'2" and would be more than happy with an original MINI if they were more available over here. Big cars are terrible to drive, I'd rather walk than drive an ML, but realize I'm in the vast minority of my countrymen.

If you have a family, you can understand why the ML cargo and space are much needed. Otherwise I would much rather have a wagon than silly tiny suv. A wagon has better utility and driving dynamics than the Evoque. Does liking wagons make me one of those "good ole 'Mericans"? LOL

Nope, wagons are cool. I'd have a 335i E91 or F31 with a manual in a second, but oh yeah, BMWNA doesn't want me to have it. Instead my wife has this odd compromise of an X1 35i. We considered the Evoque for few seconds but the sight lines, tall stance and anemic engine took it out of the running quickly.

That's not off-road, that's just a muddy field...

Great choice. I checked out an X1 the other day while waiting for my car to be serviced. It very much looks like wagon with a mild lift. I agree the visibility out of the rear of the Evoque was lacking, to say the least.

There has been some arguments on here what exactly is or isn't off-roading.

Maybe u can't read. The OP has already stated what he'll use the vehicle for, thus the post. That's more 'off-roading' than he'll ever see. Here ya go:

Even my wife's X1 28i will blow away an Evoque - and that's with... wait for it... a 4cyl engine!

I don't know, but last time I lived in Europe (half my life) plenty of families tended to use much smaller vehicles as their only vehicle, ie VW Golf or Ford Fiesta are even considered big, they make the Evoque seem huge in comparison.

I would be alone in the car most of the time. No luggage whatsoever. Besides, I've already dismissed the ML250 CDI for being a Mercedes (old man's car) and even slower than the so called 'anemic' Evoque. I've got two options now, the A6 3.0T or the Evoque. My criteria are-

Looks (head turner or not)
Gadgets (e.g. The LEDs, touchpad, ambient lighting, etc)
Daily driving comfort (the A6 is blistering fast, 0-62 mph in 5.5 seconds, but the Evoque might just be more comfortable)

I'd go the A6, it's just a much better vehicle for what you want than the Evoque, besides once you put 20 inch wheel on the Evoque, (unless you go with the magnetic damper option) the ride would be worse than a leaf sprung horse cart.

The Evoque comes with 17 inchers here.

17inch rims on an Evoque look awefull, bang goes one of your reasons for buying it straight away, it just doesn't look cool on 17's.

I somehow find smaller rims with higher profile tires better on an SUV. Larger rims look good on a sport sedan like my 3er. Just my $0.02

you might be the only person who thinks that, it was very hard finding an Evoque photo with it on 17's, I don't think I've seen one without at least 19 inch rims, most where I live ride on 20's.

In that case get the A6. Why even get a suv, if you don't need to haul people or need its utility?
