Why do they need flared fenders?

I am not understanding why bmw could not contain their front suspension within the wheel wells without it sticking out so much as to require flared fenders. I like the fenders cosmetically but functionally its sad that the fenders flare out so much, especially for such a compact lightweight suspension.

Much smaller cars stuff MUCH bigger suspensions in without the need for flared fenders.

I guess I am wondering why did they not put the suspension in more?

just sayin

the fenders are fine.

there good for aftermarket wheels to, allow for a more aggresive stance.
