Redline is 8400... But this can be easily overlooked for getting the Fibonacci sequence on to m3post.com!

I knew you were going to say that But why does my M3 tach say the redline is 8250 rpm? And why does my car shift at an indicated 8250 rpm when in D5?

Where do you get 8400 rpm from?

Any decent magazine and all official BMW documentation such as these two. Mine shifts at 8400 or at least visually very close to it. However, dumping ECU data typically shows instances of 8500 rpm and even higher.

That's a good doc, thanks for posting. I hadn't seen it before.

Page 18 has dyno graphs comparing the S65 and the S54 and I was reminded once again just how astonishingly flat the torque curve of the S65 engine really is.

S65 V8 is 8,400 redline. The S85 V10 has an 8,250 redline.

Pretty sure they got it in EU but we in NA did not. I believe there are thread(s) on this topic from back in the day.

Absolutely. This is probably the largest achievement of the S65, if fares even better than some prestigious engines starting with the letter "F" in this regard. This too is something that one actually feels in a WOT run to redline.

Are these stroker pistons 50 g lighter because they are low compression pistons and therefore have less material? Or because the forged aftermarket pistons are just lighter due to a different design?

It's a combo of both. Even the 12:1 CR pistons are quite a bit lighter, but it will take some more digging for me to find the numbers.

The pistons are the same ferroprint style piston actually by the OEM manufacturer (MAHLE) and are not aftermarket. Not sure on the lighter weight though...... 50 g is a lot of mass to save on a piston of 1mm larger diameter without some redesign.

Hopefully regular guy will have some more info!

If you want to make a real difference, change compression height and the ring package, glad to help.
