He didn't go crazy. It was all bullshit.
He came to the conclusion that it didn't matter what he said or did, people just laughed. He went at it for 2 1/2 years, every episode an instant classic. The pressure was overwhelming. He was the most popular entertainer in America for 3 years. There was no one more talked about or revered. He went from being a stand up comedian living on his own schedule to having to come up with funny ideas on a deadline. It was too much for him and he just didn't want to do it anymore.
