Performance Friction EPIC Rotor Fail :(
I bought a set of performance friction rotors for my E92 in December and have used them at 5 1/2 track events. After 2 weekends they were feeling like they had deposits on them or had warped. I was a bit surprised since I got 7 weekends out of the stock rotors (I know I'm slow as hell). The vibration was manageable and my new rings had not shown up so I went ahead and ran on them.
After 2 run sessions I heard a "twang" kinda noise followed by a sound reminiscent of baseball cards hitting a bicycles spokes. We pulled in and found this....even freaked out the track mechanics Last edited by ShadeD1; 05-19-2011 at 03:43 PM.. |

You must be brutal on brakes!I got 40+ days(3 seasons) on my stock rotors and I am not a slow guy on track! Those rotors had pretty severe heat checking which should have resulted in the rotors being tossed out. What exactly are you doing to your brakes? What do the pads look like?Do you use the temperature heat paint to know your actual rotor temps?

I'm not particularly hard on the brakes, my mechanics think it was a defective rotor. Also I mis-counted my events. I actually got 6 1/2 weekends out of them but still....

I'd call up PF and see if they want to perform a post mortem on that rotor. I'd expect a some comps from them over this one.

Follow up...I called PF today to let them know my mechanic was sending the rotors in. The first question he asked me was what kind of car then asked if it had ABS, I said M3 and yes to which he replied "oh yeah, that happens, we will get with AJ and get you a new set." Sounds like they have seen this a bunch.
Not sure I'm gonna use the new set though, I'm kinda concerned about dying when it happens again. |

The pulsing of the ABS will contribute to more heat in the brakes as you will tend to operate more at the threshold of maximum brake force than manually modulating the brake force without ABS.

Makes sense, but OP said he wasn't braking hard enough, per his instructor.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."
