Odds the M3 carbon fiber roof makes it to Production, M6 style

When reading the reviews for the M6, when it first came out, many of the magazines noted that the price of the M6 could have been substantially reduced by removing the carbon fiber roof. However, the carbon fiber roof made it to production in the US and overseas. So, given that the M3 is likely to come in almost half as much as the M6, does the concept car's carbon fiber roof make it to production? Standard...(we, American's love our sun-roofs), or $7-10,000 option...(making it the highest price option on any BMW within the United States). Thoughts

it's gonna make it standard because the M3 needs all the weight saving it can get to beat out the competition with only 414 hp.

id say it will make it. We havent seen anything groundbreaking with the M3, so these "touches" are a must IMO. I would have liked to see BMW do somethig spectacular with the brakes as well...thought we'd see carbon brakes...

After they tease you that hard, it's got to be standard.

The M3 roof will be made in sintetic material "covered" by a tin surface of carbon fiber, check the press release. This way they will keep the cost low.
Ciao!

No it's CFK covered by a thin clear coat. If I'm right that's quite the same BMW used on M6!?

Best regards, south

That's correct: CF with clear lacquer as in the the last CSL and the M6. However, the weave does look somewhat different.

It isn't likely to be available on the regular M3 as they have to save some content specifically for the CSL version.

No chance now or probably ever to get carbon brakes. They are for race cars only and any work when hot enought to practically glow. However, ceramic rotors would have been very nice. One small reason top end P-cars cost so much though is details like this.

I have a feeling it might be optional. The M3 is more bread and butter than the niche M6. As mentioned, US market like their sunroofs.

Completely agree. It will probably be on the CSL only, which may or may not (I'd bet NOT) come to the US.

What is BMW kills the CSL edition and merges the two versions into the standard?

Already had the same thought, because I read anywhere an interview with Bruhnke (former m.chief) who said there shouldn't be to many CSL versions to keep the exclusiveness. And an M6 CSL seems to be on the way....

Agree. Plus too expensive for the base model.

Wow, that is food for thought. Maybe they make ONLY an M6 CSL, and with it they pull out all the stops in terms of weight savings and performance. They could make most of the body out of CF and alumnium, thinner glass, more HP out of the V10. If they could get that thing down to 3500 lbs with 550 HP and perfect suspension tuning it would be something.

I still have hope for an M3 CSL, though. With Aluminum doors, less sound deadening, thinner glass, stiffer suspension, and about 450 HP that would probably take a GT3.

Or they could just drop the V10 in it and be done!
