So I was talking to a good friend and the cost of modifying cars came up. He was wondering how much money enthusiasts spend to satisfy their love of cars. So I said, let's see. So my fellow enthusiasts, I come to you today seeking real world dollar amounts. Let's see what we spend on average to satisfy our craving to drive the ultimate "Ultimate Driving Machine"........................Phil

I selected 5k-9k. Seems like that is the norm for me each car. Although I will say before joining this Forum my average on Mods was 0$! lol

$0 for me. I can't think of anything to mod that's absolutely necessary.

modding the M3 is definitely much more expensive than my previous cars (e92 335i and range rover sport). Especially when multiple sets of quality wheels and a quality exhaust comes into play. With that said I don't normally go above $15k in modding my cars, that might change though if I get an ESS kit.

just a nice exhaust = 4k+
cosmetic parts (lip, splitters, diffuser, trunk lip, grills, angel eyes) easily get to 4k+ rims...2-4k+ 10k+ if you stop there (almost nobody does) |

I try not to keep a tally... Even a decent winter setup on it's own throws me into category 3...

I definitely want to stay under 10k on this car. I've spent way too much on my E46...but I have learned a lot (the hard way). IMO, an M3 is cheaper to mod in the long run because its so much better to start with vrs a non-M...and its the little stuff!
Sticking with suspension (have), wheels (have), BBK, a couple of bolt ons, software, harnesses, diffuser (have), and maybe a GTS-style lip.

I went over 10k so fast it wasn't even funny. Now I am modding my garage so the M has a proper place to sleep. This is an expensive hobby.

That's funny I just was thinking about this this morning. I'm wondering when this bad habit will stop. There needs to be a rehab for us! I'm 5K in just started. I'm debating tricking this car out or starting an older project/track car.

It's just way too easy to spend > $15k on our cars - wheels/tires, complete exhaust system, brakes, and suspension are all that's required to exceed that amount!

Might be threadjacking but we should have a thread of "modding tips". For example...cheaper is almost never better and usually ends up being more expensive. Hard lesson learned on my 330.

Not a jack move at all.......I think it's a good idea. First timers in the mod game can waste tons of money if they're not careful. Homework is the key and this forum a great resource. With all the information on here no one should get taken for a ride (no pun intended) when modding........................Phil
