Ferrari F430 F1 vs ESS VT2 650 DCT M3
I've always wanted a Ferrari but never really thought about owning one as I like to think I make good financial decisions. No way an F-car could be a good financial decision...right? Well...through the beauty of pre-owned leasing and some favorable tax rules for business owners, I'm looking at F430's right now and flying to Houston to look at one this weekend. Nothing flashy: silver coupe with black interior with yellow fender emblems and yellow calipers (probably want to upgrade to carbon ceramic at some point) with Scuderia wheels.
On paper my M3 would hand the F430 it's ass on the straights. The F430 F1 coupe is only maybe a 12.0/122 1/4 mile car where the M3 is capable of 130+ traps so no contest there. The F1 transmission is also much slower at shifting than the DCT. It's raw and hits you in the back. Shifting speed is maybe 160ms vs the M3 DCT's of something crazy like 20ms which as you all know is seemless (particularly with the DCT GTS software I have). Looking for some feedback for those that have driven the F1 vs DCT. Chances are the F430 would have the upper edge on the track, but I'll stick with the M3 for that mostly. Maybe take the F430 on a private track day with a limited exotic run group...at tracks like Laguna Seca or Auto Club Speedway that aren't as brutal as Willow Springs or Buttonwillow. I'd be pretty paranoid though. Furthermore, the F430 will sit in the garage. Maybe I'll take it to work a couple times a month. My drive is cool. I live in Monarch Beach and work in Newport Beach and my commute takes me through Laguna Beach on Pacific Coast Highway. Maybe I'll take it to some of the roll-racing events and get smoked by stock turbo e85 335's. But I won't care. I'll drive there and back in a Ferrari. In the end, I'm trying to justify to myself that it's not all about performance. Anyone that's driven one knows that it's truly a harmony of integrated precision that elicits emotion/feeling that could never be experienced by anything other than a high revving, screaming NA V8 that sits right behind your ears. If it was only about performance, I'd be reviving my previous thread about getting an R8 v10 with an aftermarket twin turbo system or a 911T with upgraded turbos. I've concluded that I'd rather have a stock F430. The M3 will be relegated to daily driving duties (selling my STi) and will live outside the garage. Will have to throw on a larger pulley for less boost to run 91 octane so that will suck. But I can deal with that for the pleasure of seeing the F-car under a cover in the garage. Curious as to the perspectives of those who've got both...or at least who have driven the F430 and the DCT S/C M3. Cheers.

congrats and report back with your thoughts. I'd love to own a Ferrari one day, and exactly for the reasons you described. it doesn't have to be the fastest car on the road, and the fact that your S/C M3 may be faster in some ways doesn't take anything away from the allure of the Ferrari. it's a piece of art. I've always wanted a black one with a tan interior.

A guy I hung out with in high school had one (his dad passed away and he inherited the car)
Maybe it's because I have such ridiculous memories in it like rolling through wendy's drive thru and the fact we were both teenagers rolling around in a Ferrari but I'd love to get my hands on one. Do it.

Wow, that'd be a heck of an addition. No doubt, when you got the sound of that engine screaming away, it's definitely not about performance, even though you have both since you aren't getting rid of the M.
Having said that, I'd be terrified of the maintenance cost. Or is that covered under CPO? Regardless, everyone should own a Ferrari at some point if they have a chance.

Good news about the car I'm looking at - it's had the header recall/replaced and the F1 clutch wear is minimal. Those are the two things to look out for. Otherwise the F430's have been very reliable.

The experience of driving a Ferrari is worth the money. It's so different from normal cars. Both for the driver and for the "audience". Even when cruising around with my friends older F355, it attracts so much attention it's crazy.
However maintenance costs are totally mind-blowing. $1400 per year won't get you very far, especially if you are serious about tracking it even a tiny bit. Repairs are about 3 to 4 times more expensive compared to a BMW. Parts are just crazy expensive. Reliability has been improved alot on the F430 though, compared to previous generations. You wouldn't wanna know what has broken on my friends F355 in just one year of ownership. From melted valves to exploded flywheel, it's crazy. And the interior quality is not that great either on these cars. It's all about the engine

DO IT! It might be a little slower than your M3 in a straight line, but the comparison ends there. The F430 is just a magnificent car. The engine is the perfect size, it's lighter, lower and balanced perfectly. I've driven one extensively and the amount of grip and the way it turns into the corners is just amazing. It's pretty reliable and apart from the issues with the headers you've mentioned, there's no other significant weaknesses. If you can swap the stock exhaust for a capristo you won't regret it. It'll sound better than the Scuderia version this way. The motor is chain driven, so no more engine out belt changes with this one. The newer Ferraris are meant to be driven and be reliable enough to do so on a daily basis, so if you get one with 10-25k miles on it and plan on driving it a couple times per month it should last a long long time without any major issues. My plan is to add one to the garage as well and keep my M3 for daily driving.
Again, do it and post pics when you get it! |

Go for it man, you only live once! Always been more of a lambo man myself but the prancing horse is obviously amazing as well. If your like me you neck will get sore from parking it and walking away but always turning your head around to look and grin

Buy it and track it! That's a longer term goal, but nothing sexier than a lapping Italian sportscar!

We all know you can get into a 3 generations back Ferrari 355 for like $60k. The F430 is the next generation and can be had from $90k-$279k. Only 430 I would consider is... Why not look at a 458 Italia if you want a Ferrari? Last edited by Endless619; 10-25-2013 at 09:36 PM.. |

My father in law has had a 360, 430, and scuderia in the 5 years I've dated/married my wife. The scuderia is very hardcore, loud, all cf, and just a wicked car. The 430 has more creature comforts. I drove all of them. One thing I can tell you is the maintenance on these cars is never ending. All 3 seemed to always have a check engine light or some issue. All three had less than 10k miles.
Talk to a Ferrari dealer, there is some inspection/tune up the cars have to go through at like 20k miles that costs $10k, I forget what it was but I can ask him. If your looking for a used one, you want to buy after it's done, or before and plan on doing it.

Thanks for the comments guys.
I've got a flight plan today to head to Houston to see a 2005 F430 in Silver/Black and then Pittsburgh to see a 2005 F430 in Grey/Tan. Before my afternoon flight, I'm going to see a couple 2011 911 Turbo S cars right here in California. The Porsche is a much better performer (430 scud/458 territory), can be modded if I want, and is more practical with a warranty and today's creature comforts. But it ain't a Ferrari.
