Multiple malfunctions thrown tonight

Immediately upon starting my car to come home from work I get the following.
(1) Engine malfunction - reduced power, (2) DSC malfunction, (3) DBC malfunction, and (4) start assist malfunction. Any ideas? I imagine its a sensor of some sort based on my search results. I turned the car off and started it about 4 more times tonight to run errands and all was well....no errors, I couldn't duplicate anything.

I should also mention I had the clock spring replaced by the dealer about a month ago after I lost power to everything in the steering wheel....horn, airbag, all controls. I'm about one month out of warranty now. That came in right at the buzzer.

You are not alone:

I've had the same symptoms you mention a few times in my 4 years of ownership. Always went away after a restart. But now it won't . Need to bring it in .

No way to know without the codes. Pure speculation at this point.

I stopped at an Autozone later on last night. This was when it was running normally again. The M3 wasn't listed as an option in his scanner so we tried pulling codes for a 3 series. It didn't pull anything.

scanner should detect the codes properly. Unfortunately, nothing you can do until it acts up again. Good luck.

So exactly one week later I start my car this afternoon and I've got the same four malfunctions. Stopped at Autozone to have the codes read and get the following.

U1140
U1151

Some sort of BMW specific codes....I guess that scanner couldn't read them. Only thing I noticed that was out of the ordinary at this time was the car was idling high, a little over 1K (I'm normally at 750). I turned the car off, waited about 5 seconds and fired it back up. All was well....no malfunctions and normal idle. I'll be taking it in this weekend. What do you guys think? Idle control valve?

Definitely throttle actuator, take it to the dealer right away.

Here is several more members who had the same issue: http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=696718

Sounds like that could be it. Prince, is that really a $4 or $5K repair? I'm one month out of warranty with only 38K miles on the car. I don't see that being covered under goodwill, which would really suck.

The service adviser is my friend at the dealership, he showed me the warranty invoice which was around $2,900. He told me out of warranty it would be $4-5k

Beats me. My only question is if I take this in and the codes aren't going off when I bring it in are they going to take a look at it? It's my understanding that some codes are stored, so they should be able to figure it out, right? Everything is running smoothly today and I don't feel like making a wasted trip to the dealer.

The throttle actuator records the Abnormal voltage as far as I remember. My lights were all gone by the time I got to the dealership , but they could easily find the problem was due to the throttle actuator

Sounds good. I spoke to my SA today and he said he would put this in for a goodwill repair, although he couldn't guarantee anything. He also mentioned that he had seen quite a few M3's in for bad throttle actuators.

Yes, pretty common for all e9x M3s from 08-12
Good luck.

Good luck.
Just got the full auto logic printout from indy shop. In addition to all of my modules having very old software I got the following faults.

279D Power management, closed circuit current violation
CDC0 CDBD Throttle valve actuator CAN message, bank 2
CD93 Bus Off throttle valve CAN

At BMW now waiting on their diagnosis. Indy shop thought it could just be software problems and said they would start with updating some modules.

Don't know, they advised me to take it to BMW and see if they would goodwill it. BMW agreed with them and said they thought it was software. They're updating me to 231E and gave me a 135 as a loaner. They put it in for goodwill, but will charge me $295 for the update if it doesn't go through. Car will be ready tomorrow....if that doesn't do the trick throttle actuator on bank 2 will need to be replaced.

just curious.. when this happens and if restart makes everything normal again, will the codes stay? when you take it into the dealer, if they can't repro it, will they send you home?

They did initially update my software too. It was a waste of time in my case.

Yes, the codes are stored in the DME.

Well, I hate to be negative, Prince, but I feel the same will probably happen here. There's clearly something wrong with the throttle actuator. I don't see how a software update can fix that.
