Poll: Stick drivers who now have DCT

This isn't meant to be a 6MT vs. DCT thread (seriously...stop). But a different thread made me wonder how many DCT drivers have previously owned an MT vehicle, vs. those that have always driven non-stick.

This might help provide some insight into whether DCT owners have them so they can drive an M, or because they prefer them, or...

So, the choices in the poll are simple:

Chose DCT, and have owned and driven an MT vehicle
Chose DCT, and have never owned and driven an MT vehicle

Cheers

My M3 is DCT.

2 of my other 3 cars are manuals, one a 6speed, the other a gated 5.

I believe that variety is the spice of life.

Twelve years of MT cars and my DCT M3 is the best damn transmission I've ever had. I drive in manual mode only and love it. I don't see myself going back to a MT.

20 years of MT before getting the DCT. I just wanted to try this new technology. Although I do miss rowing the gears and the joy of a well executed heel and toe downshift, I will definitely be getting a DCT in my next M4 .

10 years and just over 100,000 miles in my MT E46M3. We only have 1 car living in NYC and my wife never learned to drive the MT it so I went with DCT. I would never buy another MT again when a DCT is available.

Poll not showing on my iPad but spent more than 20 years driving stick but love the DCT. Still enjoying driving manual cars on occasion but don't see myself going back unless it is purely a weekend/fun car. Maybe when the kids go off to college...

In 20 years all my vehicles but one have been stick. I liked the more connected feel and I've always been old-school. Basically just got sick of working the clutch in traffic. Love the DCT and would never go back. There are benefits I had not even considered, plus it seems like an evolutionary step forward. I waited years for the perfect M3 to be built- V-8 and clutchless.

22yrs of manuals, drive the DCTs in class at the PC and at other road course events, great transmission but still ordered a manual for my '13. Still learning to rev match and just now getting used to 6sp track stuff but wouldn't have it any other way. Already have an automatic in my Hemi Ram so... don't want another

I went for a manual, but had a hard time finding one. After test driving a m3 in DCT, i found it to be very enjoyable. I went with DCT because it was easy for me to get without ordering and found it i could live with it.

After driving it longer i feel the nature of the engine ( fast and high revving) goes very well with a DCT. I am a manual guy, but pretty happy with this DCT. Although i would still prefer a manual in other cars.

Have had mixture of both over the years, but after test drive with DCT...I was sold. No real preference for either, for me it depends on the vehicle.

Choose DCT coming from a 5sp Evo X.

Much more fun to drive on the track, I can focus more on driving than shifting. Yes, I suck a driving stick on a track so DCT makes sense. And as a DD I can focus on dodging crappy drivers too.

I had a DCT in 2008 but the only reason I got it in DCT was because I didn't know how to drive a 6 speed. I now have a 2012 with MT and would never go back.

My last 4 cars were manual transmission, including a 2008 M3. Now I have a 2011 M3 with DCT... I actually prefer this car with DCT compared to my previous MT. Like someone else said, it just fits this car so well! With that said, I still enjoy MTs, and I'll probably pick up an S2000 later this year =)

I blame all of you for the death of the MT in the GT3!

My Lotus track car is a MT - but my m3 daily driver is DCT. This is now my 2nd DCT in a row, and picked it because of both resell price, the ability to have other drive my car and the fact overall I still like the transmission even though I prefer the manual. The m3 DCT is a 1000x better than the autos I've driven in similar cars. I love the fact it stays in place and doesn't try to immediately clutch out when you let off the gas. The DCT in the 335is (the *is* has a real DCT, not the auto in the other 335s) is inferior to the one in the m3 -- both in adjustability as well as the most noticeable immediate clutch out on brake release.

Ultimately I feel the manual transmission is dead/dying. Even the manuals left aren't what they used to be. The new vette and Porsches all blip the throttle for you for rev matching, have clutch diverter valves that deaden clutch control and ultimately just aren't as much fun anymore. I don't think cars like my Exige are really being built anymore - and certainly are going away everywhere. I finally bought my first DCT when I decided I had to learn to love another transmission.

So in the end, yes, the DCT is an amazing transmission. Yes, I will buy another on my next daily driver. However, no, the DCT isn't as much fun as a real manual transmission.

I take pride in being a future heel-toe historian.

Got my E92 with DCT with all my previous cars being Manual. It was not my first choice (obviously would rather manual) but the deal was right and DCT isn't all that bad...
