MILC's

So all you big photography buffs what is the general consensus on MILC's? What is considered the best body / lens combo?

First I've heard the term "MILC". Sounds pretty stupid actually....

They really need to get their crap together and come up with one solid, good sounding term for these things. I still like EVIL the best to describe these things.....

Oh, and no first hand experience with them. I believe most use "contrast detection" autofocus systems, which means they'll be less than ideal for sports photography.

I read it too fast and thought MILF... now I'm disappointed.

A buddy of mine has one. been using it since it came out. It's no slr but it's alright as an upgrade from a point and shoot. a bit overpriced but it really does take some nice photos.

someone on the forum is shooting the sony, and from what i've read it's pretty impressive.

but from what i read, if you're looking at point and shoot sized cameras, take a look at the Canon S95, you lose out on the interchangable lenses, but you still get RAW photos, and it shoots about as well as an SLR. and you save a ton of money because you're not spending it all on lenses just to get the shots you want.

or just stop the foreplay, and go straight to the sex (DSLR)

all the features you're looking for are on a DSLR, they are about the same price as those mirrorless jobbies, but all the benefits of a DSLR.

but when you have a brick-of-a-D3 or 1D, you want something small to carry around for personal stuff.

i'm waiting for an X100. not interchangeable, but i only need one focal length (35mm).

you don't know a single photog who doesn't have a smaller camera than their dSLR? that's surprising.

not a P&S......

i got my D700 and my D40...

i'd never take a $80 P&S to any event where i have to capture images......

it's like having a Z06 and a Nissam Maxima in the garage and telling people you're gonna show up to the track in the Max.........

I carried the tank on a recent San Diego trip (D3 + 70-200) and the wife carried the Canon SD1100IS P&S. I got more and better shots, but I also had to lug the thing around! When we took the kids to Legoland, the tank got left behind (I wanted to do rides, the wife didn't want to carry the tank....)

There is certainly something to be said for having a smaller camera (P&S, EVIL, whatever) along. They are about the size of a small quality lens, and serve their purpose.

high-end like what??
i know tons of professional photographers with pro (D3/1D) bodies that would never take their camera to a dinner or a walk in the park or a lunch on the street. we all use our iphones.

and we're not talking $80 P&S, we're talking $1,000+ small-form-factor cameras with large sensors (X100, GH2, pen, Leica X1, M9).

i would NEVER take a P&S or a MILC anywhere that i expect to get memorable shots of my family or any other event.

it's pointless.

if i plan on taking pictures, i'm taking the rig.....doesn't bother me to lug anything around.....

i went to D-Land last year and lugged around the D700 for 3 days straight. took it on the plane with me, flew with it, walked around the terminals with it, walked @ 35 miles around D-Land and California Adventure, lugged it back to the airport, walked it around the terminal and flew back with it still around my neck....

i coulde imagine the let down i would have had with a P&S......

I bought a waterproof point and shoot just so in major rain, i'd leave the other cameras behind. That being said. I'm with Litos, it's on my back/around my neck the rest of the time.

I understand what you guys are saying, but the only thing that would really stop me is if i were going to a theme park where i knew i wouldn't be able to just pop the camera into a really good locker or carry the bag on the ride with me.

I had my bag with me the whole way around Disney without thinking twice.

it is not the camera that takes the photos anymore than it is the pen that writes the book. don't forget that. you can take a good photo with anything.
