First time ever: FFax county propery tax assessment increased my M3 value

I have a 2013 M3, one of the first off the line, so I took delivery in August 2012 and paid Fairfax County personal property tax on the "blue book" value for the 2013 tax year (it's on a fiscal year cycle).

When I got this year's bill for 2014, they reported the blue book value of my M3 had increased (about $6,600, if memory serves).

Got to be the first time in history this happend. Sucks to be me.

That does not seem right - are you challenging it?

I thought Loudoun County did the same thing to me the first year I bought my car - but then I read the fine print and saw they were attempting to charge me a 10% late filing fee. I filed on a time, and thankfully save all my filings/payments/receipts etc - and got them to remove the fee. But it was very sneaky - like 7 pt font in the corner that said I was being assessed a late fee.

Good luck

That's odd. They follow Nada-Guide clean trade-in value. Did they calculate it right last year? Maybe they made a mistake last year. If I were you, I would challenge it.

I just gave up and paid it, but you're right, I should take the time to call them.

This year's bill?? You have to pay tax every year on your car?

In NY I paid the sales tax once and done.

yep, that's VA for ya! Every year, with an M3, you're on the hook for about $500 or so of taxes. I calculated that the break-even rate is about 2 or 3 years vs registering in a high sales tax state, with no property taxes.

On the flip side VA residents pay a very low income tax and sales tax (depending on your county).

You pay currently ~4.1% state sales tax when you first purchase a vehicle, and property tax each year depending on the county you live in.

I believe in more rural areas like southern VA the property tax is near null. In Northern Virginia the annual property tax seems to run between 4-5% with generally some tax relief for about the first $20k value of a vehicle; and the remaining worth taxed at normal full rate.

Cars 25+ years old (at least in my county) you do not pay property tax - as they state they can not determine an accurate value for the age of the car. Great news if you like classic cars. My 84' 911 is property tax free.
