Help with M3 model choices Pls!

Am torn between the following choices and wondered what you guys would consider in choosing between them. Prices are pretty close but I was not able to get the full specsheet yet. I lean slightly toward 3) but am concerned on the high mileage:

1) White/Black E93 2008
DCT, tech pkg, carbon trim, 19" rims, smokers pkg (?), cold pkg
36,xxx miles
$51k

2) Space Gray/Black E93 2008
DCT, tech pkg, carbon trim, 18" rims, prem sound, cold pkg
27,xxx miles
$48k

3) White/Black E93 2009 (current iDrive controls)
DCT, tech pkg, Aluminum trim, 19" rims, cold pkg
CPO extended warranty uncertain
49,xxx miles
$50k

Thanks in advance!

You can spend $10K more and have a new stripper E93 M3 thru European Delivery... that's what I would do.
Fixed.

... that's what I thought that you meant. But the OP seems to be fixed on an E93 M3.

Between these three & all other things equal - I too would go for the SG with less miles. Be sure you check each one's condition to check for abuse.

  • I think all US cars have the smokers package.
  • All things being equal, the NAV and Idrive is a lot better on the 2009+ cars.
  • The cars have been very reliable so far, but I don't think it's wise to own one without a warranty. The long term reliability of the DCT is a big and potentially very costly unknown.

haha.. thanks for the pointers... yea.. I do agree with a E92, and gave this some thought... but bottom line was I started to search for a convertible that the family can cruise around in that I could also have some fun driving...

But i am curious to know more about the Euro delivery you guys refer to... whats the diff?

Take about 7% off for US dealer's invoice and then another 7% off for Euro Delivery invoice. You should be able to get about $500 over ED invoice if you do your homework. You will have an expensive trip but one you will never forget.

Certain build dates going back two or three years have experienced the occasional failure of main bearings, if I recall correctly, the first indication of which is a ticking sound...

Do a search on this site (there have been at least a couple of threads) and find out what the build dates are to be wary of, then factor this into your decision.

Thanks for the advice.. that's quite concerning...

Also found out #1 was a BMW buy-back due to transmission issues. Claimed to be fixed but should I be concerned?

  • The bearing problem has only been reported in the forums on a very small number of cars. If it was happening in any volume we'd hear about it.
  • There were a number of issues with the early DCT's which software changes have resolved (see the sticky thread at the top of this forum). A very few people have complained about very odd behavior of their DCT transmissions which could be a concern. If you are interested in the car, find out what the specific complaints were and how they were resolved.
