Guys, need your help deciding...

I'm on the fence about a 135L. It's just about due for a refresh, and CR posted that patents were filed by Canon for a new 135L.

So... to buy or not to buy? I have a deal lined up for a new one for $875.

I don't understand the question. That's one of the all time great lenses at a good price. If you've got a use for it, then buy it.

BTW, all the announced new lenses have been seriously delayed by the tsunami. A 135mm hasn't even been announced, so it'll likely be 2013 before anything new shows up. The new 500mm and 600mm lenses still aren't available after announcements in 2010.

Dave,

The reason I ask is because the lens is just about 16 years old and is missing some features of the newer lenses (weather sealing, rounded aperture, newer lens coatings) and wasn't sure if I should wait for a replacement or just pick it up now.

So... Looks like I'll be picking it up! Thanks for your insights.

All those things are interesting, but this lens is great without them. Also, the new Series II lenses are coming out at prices 40% higher than the lenses they replace. I'd love to have a Series II 500mm to replace my current 500mm, but it cost $4000 more than I paid 18 months ago, plus I couldn't find one to buy, even if I had the money and inclination.

Take this deal. You'll always be able to get your money back out of a top performing lens.

Very good price. They often sell used for that much.

Now I'm deciding on either keeping my 70-200 2.8 IS II or returning it for an 85 1.2

I don't think you'll need an 85mm and a 135mm. I'd stay with the versatility of the excellent 70-200mm f/2.8. You'll only gain a little more than 1-stop potential and the 70-200mm has excellent bokeh at 85mm, if that's what you're after.

Brian - the 85L is sloppy for video because of its focus internals.

agreed.... I have the 70-200 F2.8, couldn't be happier with it. And if i want something with insane amounts of bokeh, it put my 135L on.

that being said, I haven't found much use for it other then rare photoshoots with friends.

Amazon has the Canon S95 P&S for $229. I had a $50 gift cert, so I applied that and grabbed one "for wifey" *cough, cough* for $179. We'll see if it lives up to the reviews.

Some nice images from it posted on POTN. I'm dying to see how it does in low light. It's supposed to be seriously capable. I'll have it tomorrow, so I'll get something posted.

Yeah, i think at the wide end of it's zoom, it does a 2.0 or 2.2 aperture opening.

so low light capable for sure.

2.0 and supposedly virtually noise free at ISO 800. Looking forward to that. I'm hoping the battery life, which is a dedicated Canon battery, is better than my Panasonic LS10. That thing will drain new alkaline batteries in two weeks even if you never take a shot.

Got the S95 today. So far I'm impressed. It's not DSLR quality, obviously, but for a P&S on full auto, it's not bad. This was shot handheld on full auto. It chose ISO 1600, f2, 1/8s, at full wide angle. The colors here are pretty accurate. And unless you zoom in to 100%, there isn't much noise. I do miss a viewfinder, though. I just can't get the hang of framing a pic on an LCD screen.

Nice, it's one of the best P&S in size/quality. my friend had a Nikon D90 but stop shooting with it when he got the Canon S90.
The last time I picked up a P&S camera, I blinded myself for a sec cause I brought the LCD screen to my eye (too use to shooting with a viewfinder.
