I think it will be under $2500. BMW says they want to sell a LOT of M3s in the US. They are going to need to keep pricing reasonable in order to do that.

I dont think MDCT is going to make that big of difference. Even on the track. It appears people make a big deal out of the SMG/DCT tranny's because the CSL was SMG. However, had it been 6MT it may have been just as fast...who knows....

From what we have heard, the DCT will be 7 speed. Even ignoring much faster shift times, 7 gears will be a huge advantage over the MT6.

It is difficult to guess if DCT will be faster than 6MT withough knowing the specs for DCT, which, to the best of knowledge, BMW has not released yet. We can speculate about shift times however. It is probably safe to bet that DCT will shift significantly faster than SMG. Does that make a difference in everyday on the street performance? No. If I order DCT, it will be for non-performance related reasons.

I don't think that it is difficult at all to expect the M-DCT to be faster than the manual the same way the VW DSG is faster than its manual counterpart. After all, the combination of a high rev V8 with decent torque and gears pre-selected (cutting gear change times at least 90%) while keeping those revs in the sweet spot (no need to depress the gas pedal to get a smooth gear change as opposed to the SMG) should be enough to cut at least .2 seconds of any comparable performance time vs. the manual. And that is not even counting on all the ECU tricks that can be better integrated with the M-DCT than can't be possible with the manual.

If Porsche can accomplish that with a fully automatic transmission in the Turbo, BMW should not have any problem achieving the same performance advantage over the manual.

It looks like the new X5 lever because it is. The (weak IMO) rumor was that the M-DCT lever in the M3 will look similar to the X5 lever.

You are wrong. +1 on what Technic said. I trust you have seen the GTI video of their DSG vs. Manual?

It will UNDOUBTEDLY be faster, straight line and track. The reasons are very simple and not really up for debate; uninterrupted power to the ground (same as saying super fast shift times), more gears, and likely closer and more optimized gear ratios for acceleration. As I have posted about extensively the gain is truly about 1/4 - 1/3 second per on power shift in any 0-X speed contest. So 0-60 mp .2-.3 sec faster, .75 - 1 sec faster 0-150 mph, etc.

The only variable/unknown here is the launch control and how good it will be. It may be that the MT, with a expert launching driver, could get the initial jump on the M-DCT at launch.

Not to mention it will get better mpg, be smoother, offer manual and automatic modes, be impossible to over-rev, rev match on downshift, induce less stress on the drive train.

I guess I am not following my own advice and adding fuel to the fire in the deabte, oh well, most threads get hi-jacked here anyway....

What's with all the hate against the X5 type of lever? Remember the comparison is against stock Step levers, VW DSG levers and BMW SMG levers....

I think the X5 lever will be awesome...modern. If BMW had the guts, they would remove the lever like Ferrari.

BTW the 7 speed M3 is going to be much faster than the 6 speed MT
