Buying my first M3 and it is out of state
Very close to finalizing a deal on a 2009 M3 that is down in NJ:
http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=955830 I wanted to check here on things I need to do and/or be aware with buying out of state. It just so happens that my friend who owns a 2011 M3 (he has done a good amount of work on it himself) lives only a few minutes away from the seller, so he was able to do a complete inspection and test drive. I will of course do the same when I go to get the car. Carfax is clean - no accidents or issues. He is the 3rd owner (less than ideal), but maintains the car very well. All maintenance has been performed at or before recommended intervals. I have the latest oil report and it looks good. Is it worth bringing to a local BMW dealership for inspection? George

I wouldn't say you have to use a BMW dealer. I did a couple of things when I bought my car from FL (and drove it back to TX) other than the standard test-drive stuff.
1) I got the BMWhat app for Android, took a Bluetooth OBDII adapter with me, and ran BMW diagnostics on the car using my android phone and the adapter, to see if anything was flagged. This is a $50 app but it does diagnostics on all the control modules AND you can do some simple coding using the app as well. 2) AFTER I signed the papers on the car (the dealership was being a dick about letting me take the car to another shop before I bought it), I drove it to an independent repair place I found on Google Maps and we looked the car over together and went for a test drive. I am confident in my ability to give a car the "once-over" so I was ok with signing the papers based on my inspection, but I just wanted to be sure before I drove all the way home.

I bought out of state. Handled all the paper work through email. But when it came time to close the deal I flew out to see the car and took it to BMW for inspection before finalizing. I wouldn't have felt comfortable buying sight unseen.

I would highly recommend a ppi. The dealership will charge 315 all in. Basically less than 1% of ask.
The ppi might uncover potential issues the seller may not be aware of. Also how are you planning on getting it home? You might want to see if nj has an interstate temporary license. Good luck and enjoy! I just got mine! |

Thanks for the helpful insight guys.
My local friend and the seller have used Northeast Motorsports (http://www.nemotorsportsllc.com/) before and it looks like I will leverage them to inspect the car. As for getting the car home, I think I have this covered, but I need to do a little more research. George

The car was inspected at Northeast Motorsports this morning and there were no issues.
Now I just need to work out day/time with the seller for me to do a quick drive and inspection myself and drive her home!! George

Purchase went smoothly earlier today and after a few hundred mile drive, my "new" M3 is safely in my garage.
It feels great to join the club! George
