The in-gear response does not surprise me at all as an owner of an N54 engined car. The little twin turbos make the N54 extraordinarily responsive. It is spooling hard from about 1000 rpm. Here is a link to a dyno by Automobile magazine:

At least this isn't an M3 vs. C63 argument In-fighting within the family is always much more productive

The 1M is a great performance bargain IMO. The M3 is better overall (especially for a track oriented car) but the 1M is probably a better "value." I also find it funny when people start arguing drag times... the my e-peen is bigger than your e-peen bench racing is entertaining. Funny that neither car was really built to be a dragster and are both much, much more than that but people still measure their worth on stop light races. If that is your measure, get something other than an M car.

You say a better "value" but are you referring to pricing as well? Because from what I have seen the number of cars that have some level of "mark-up" on them suddenly have this car costing as much as an M3.

And that leaves the owner "hoping" it doesn't see the standard depreciation that an M3 sees.

As far as the drag comment, I agree. The way to handle all of those arguments though is to do somethign like Top Gear. Get a magazine company to either build a small test track or consistently rent a certain race track and test every car on there with the same driver. It's the best way to really argue about the best traits of these types of cars.

Unfortunately very few companies on this side of the pond would want to toss that much money into it, especially since most Americans would still spend most of their time arguing 1/4 mile numbers anyway...

Well, the wording was 'destruction' not 'destroy'. What are you gonna argue that the words don't have the EXACT same meaning now?

So in my opinion, in most part of real life situations the M3 is a lot more performing,.....

No offence but magazines numbers don't tell the owl story!
"maybe it's not scientific"? Yeah, your assessment is TOTALLY unscientific. Who gives a hoot about your street racing stories.

Well I'm not sure what you were expecting in a thread that the OP wanted some input about the 1M vs. M3. The magazine test results are not meaningless and are a good point of reference for discussion. I was pointing out how similar the test results are with the two cars. Yes, the M3 has a 1/10 second advantage to 60 and 1/4mile, but as I pointed out the braking and skidpad is the same as well. So some will say well the "track" tells the whole story. I won't use my GoPro or anyone else's anecdotal evidence. The times below show very close, some in the 1M's favor and some in the M3's, but very close at any rate. No destruction or destroying going on. So to the OP, my advice, drive both cars(if you can), buy the one that you prefer. If you can't get behind the wheel of a 1M then visit the 1M section to try and balance the discussion.

Save your coin and get the new M3 or M4 coupe.
I have no doubt it will be the new King and will put an end to all the 1M is better, M3 is better, blah blah blah you see on this forum

no brainer... M3. the sound alone... and then the looks of 1 vs. 3...

no doubt the 1M is a capable car but the M3 is in another league of prestige

for a track special only, compare the 1M to the Cayman S/R which are more tactile and fun

because at the end of the day, to most drivers, what matters is fun, not .1 in the 1/4 in favor of either car

I pretty much agree with you. I would never buy a car because of 1/10, I will add that the M3 is way more predictable and stable than the 1M. The 1M is much more humbling, while the M3 really builds confidence with it's driver. Even though the 1M is not quite as fast as the M3 it 'feels' faster, more dangerous. I guess for me, when I had the M3, I could hit triple digit speeds and I would almost have to look at the cluster to confirm how fast I was going, with the 1M, the car lets you know you are moving. It's definitely more work to keep the car controlled at the limits than the M3.

BTW, my Ideal car would be an E30 M3 body, an E46 S54 engine(new lighter version as its heavier than an S65), add a few air bags, ABS, DSC to meet today's safety standards. No doubt BMW could build this car with current lighter materials they are using and keep the weight much closer to the original E30 than the 1M. But they are not building cars specifically for Pavel Metak.

Hell, if they re-re-released the E30 with the 4cylinder I would be first in line!
