Body Shop got a nail in my tire - who's fault?

I had a door repainted due to a bad ding. Paid them extra to polish and wax the entire car. I had to take it back twice to get it done right. They drove the car home to my house as a courtesy, since they kept wasting my time.

Then there's a big screw in the tire!

I call the manager, he's like "what do you want me to do?"

I settled on us paying 50 / 50 for the tire. If they didnt take 3 times to get all the swirl marks out - I wouldnt be in this mess.

I went to my SA, who I trust, he patched it and said it should be fine. However I cant imagine doing track days on a tire that is plugged - I'm not risking a $50k car on a patched tire.

So... what is your opinion? Who should have to pay for the tire?

1. Which shop in Michigan?

2. Why on earth would you let them drive your car?

I'm willing to guess you should not be tracking a car with a patched tire. You probably shouldn't exceed 100 either, as your speed rating might be affected.

As far as who should pay? That's between you and them. Tell em you're pissed, threaten to blog about how shitty they are, and tell them they have caused damage to the car and otherwise have wasted your time and money in the process.

A patched tire, if done correctly, is fine. I had a nail hole patched and was able to do 150 on it with no issues and it was smooth as butter.

+1. A properly patched tire will be fine.

To be honest with you, I don't think anybody should pay for the tire since it does not need to be replaced. Sometimes, stuff happens man. How do you know the screw was not there before you took it to the body shop? There are way too many variables here to place any sort of blame.

The same $15 kit that you can buy at your local auto parts store works well and will out last your tire. So you dont need a new tire, the body shop should have patched it up and it will cost them $3.

For what it's worth my car was in for service and the dealer found a nail (after it had been there all day) ... We weren't sure who's fault it was but they offered to take care of it "this one time." Turns out it just needed to be patched but they claimed they were prepared to replace if necessary.

I'm with others though and think the patch should hold if done correctly!

As long as the nail is in the tread and not the sidewall, why wouldn't it hold?

...strange, all the stealerships in Southern California insist on replacing the tire. They absolutely refuse to patch anything...even a dead center tread nail.

Hey what do you know, stealerships and Obama have something in common

Yea down in Miami I had a nail in NY 650i and two dealers were refusing to patch. I have no idea where there is a shop that patches tires. I think about this a lot with my new m3.

Same around here...they claim for safety reasons it's BMW's policy not to patch tires, esp. on M cars. I know the SA very well and he told me about a place down the road who took care of it right away. That particular place does really good work on tires, wheels, and alignments. The bmw stealership has even sent them cars they have had trouble aligning/balancing. They have a policy not to patch an individual tire more than two times.

They're used to dealing with runflats I would guess. Nobody will touch runflat repair. So the 'we don't repair runflats' policy becomes 'we don't repair tires.' And of course, some dealers think the M3 tires ARE runflats
