For $99 bucks...why are you guys all so concerned about butchering the stock unit? It's a cheap, worthwhile mod...if you ever sell the car you can simply leave it installed or you offer it on the forum as a trade for a stock shifter plus a few bucks!

I ordered this from ebay as well and i love it!!

Because if you end up "butchering" it, you will be spending quite a bit to get another stock one since there is no way to just get a ring.

OK and you entirely missed my point. It's a $99 dollar mod...leave the ZHP knob in the car if you decide to sell. Big deal...

Didn't miss the point at all. If any part of the install is "butchered", there is no going back but to buy another whole shift knob unit.

We all know that you can leave the ZHP knob in the car if you want to sell.

It's not about putting a new shift knob on so maybe you're missing the point. You have to remove all the leather from the OEM ring in order to attach another boot to it. Yes, it's probably somewhat easy assuming you take your time but if something happens to the ring, you're screwed. Putting a ZHP knob on is not the tricky part.

I give up...clearly something is being lost in translation. It took me 15 minutes which included hacking up my OEM boot, tapping the wires, and swapping the shift pattern insert with OEM (so the M would illuminate as well).

If you take your time...there's really not much to worry about.

Like I said, this has nothing to do with the knob. We are talking about doing a shift boot.

In order to install the "KNOB" you must cut the boot, which IS what i am talking about.

ANYWAYS-- I will be using an XACTO knife and a steady hand to separate whatever I can get of the stock leather from the ring and put on the new boot in its exact spot with krazy glue. Unless someone recommends something other than krazy glue. I am going this route because krazy glue comes in the kind in which you can get a long, thin nozzle that would make applying it easier. I then will follow the DIY thread on here to install it, even though I have looked at it about a million times!

Im not sure what the think about the stitching on these. I'm torn because on one hand, they look great. On the other, the stitching wouldn't match anything else. I guess that doesn't bother you though?

The smear on the aluminum ring isnt a scratch, its just residue from the tape that held the power wires to the knob when it was shipped.

I will never understand why you guys think this is an attractive shiftknob. My Z4MC came with this when I bought it used and it went straight to the trashcan. Ugliest piece on that car and this one. I have the carbon fiber performance knob which is on an entirely different level than this.

Took me 10 minutes to cut the OEM tractor shiftknob out of the car and install the performance one.

This is too 1990 Honda CRX for me.

Solid work! More than I have the guts for (somehow always screw up when superglue is involved). Can't believe we have to go through all that to get new shift boot on.

I wouldn't go through it again. Too much extra snipping and pulling to get it right. Hardest part was getting the actual ring/boot into its original place because this leather seems to be a higher quality and is a bit "thicker" than the OEM one. Fitment was snug, but man this thing feels great!
