Brake Line Question

Is there 6 rubber lines on our cars? 1 at each corner obviousy and 2 near the pumpkin? About to order an SS line kit and some kits say "comes with 4 lines" and other kits show a picture of 6 lines.

Yes there are a total of 6 total. Some people dont run all six. I bough the stoptech kit which came with 6 and did not install the two inner ones.

Are you sure you have a Stoptech kit? I was about to buy the Stoptech kit but noticed it only comes with 4 lines.

I put the four-line Stoptech kit on my car and was happy with it. Happy enough that when I put the AP Racing BBK on, I didn't see any point in installing the short lines on the rear subframe, so I left them stock. The AP kit comes with a six-line Goodridge set, and I never had any concerns about only using four.

Interesting. I just ordered the stoptechs. Now I'm wondering if I should cancel and keep looking for the challenge kit.

I intalled all 6 with my AP BBK. The two short ones on the subframe are a pain to get at -- not sure if it was worth my effort.

I would love to hear what the pros have to say about the 2 small lines if there is any need to replace these.

Why wait for a "pro" to answer? I think the answer is pretty simple. It's a system, so you've now left the 2 small lines as the "weak" links. However, if you leave them as they are and replace everything else with stronger lines, then the amount of volume increase (something undersired) due to expansion in diameter of the line when under pressure will be reduced. Whether that reduction is sufficient, or whether that reduction would be significantly better with the 2 lines replaced depends on multiple variables, including the condition of your lines, your sensitivty in feel, to the temperature in the system at various locations (e.g. at the piston), the fluid, the age and condition of the fluid, etc.

That's taking it a little far. Its just brake lines...I was just curious is anybody who has any experience with both could give there 2 cents thats all. Honestly those 2 lines are so small I bet it can't be felt at all but still I don't like doing things half assed. If the kit I wanted was not back ordered I wouldn't have even posted this.

to be honest, i wont worry about it too much. the important brake lines (ie fronts) will be completely stainless steel already. the ones that arent changed are 2 very short sections in the back. i doubt you will be able to feel much of a difference since the back doesnt do most of the braking anyway. i say just go for the 4 line kit and call it a day.

by the way, when i took out the oem rubber lines, they are Very thick and look to be very durable. they arent just regular brake lines that i've seen in other regular street cars.

Sorry, didn't mean anything by my post. Was just trying to give a technical explanation. As to whether or not it makes a difference, based on the technical reasoning, it's up to you. IMO, it's not going to make a difference at the moment. Maybe, after the car is 20-25 years old and the lines are rotted or fatigued, then perhaps it's a bigger impact, but certainly not while the car is relatively new.

The Stoptech SS Lines now come with 6 lines. I believe a couple years ago they sold them with only 4.

I got 6 lines in my kit but only put on 4 lines as well. At first I thought they sent me 2 extra on accident but when I found out they were the for 2 small lines in the back I didn't even bother to install them.

When did they start selling the 6 line kit? I would hate to order a ST kit and have it be the older kit with only 4 lines.

It has been 6 lines altogether since at least 2007.

hey guys. new to the forum. just picked up an 08 e90. love the car, but one of the biggest issues i have with it aside from the lack of feel from the clutch pedal, is the squishy feeling of the brakes.

any difference or preference on stoptech vs challenge SS lines? Looking to get a set ASAP.

thanks
