1200 Mile Service
So, I just scheduled my 1200 mile service appointment with my SA. I asked him exactly what would be done and he gave me a typical short answer...
Basically an oil change and then just run down a checklist to make sure everything is OK. I asked specifically if the oil is the only fluid that will be changed and he said yes. I recall seeing a post that detailed a few more items than that. What should really be happening at this inspection? My car is a 6MT. Thanks, Chris Sorry if there are 9 threads on this already...

The people cried out for answers, and answers were bestowed upon the people...
BOOM! http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=265139 Did that really come as a surprise to you? Should have asked a service adviser or one of the mechanics. I don't think either cross into the others territory ( wall ) it's taboo.

Yeah, I had a different SA that day than usual and had to explain that the diff and trans must be changed on manuals. They still probably didn't but it's on the paperwork that they did.

My SA advised only engine oil will be changed Is he correct or wrong .... ??? Are cars in Canada being serviced different then in the USA ??? Can any of you Canadian drivers add what was done on your 2011 or 2012 cars with MT or even the M-DCT (what does your invoice detail from your 2000 KM maintenance check?)... Thanks fellows

Rolf, it's my understanding that changing the diff and transmission fluid DID NOT change. Regardless of region. They may not have changed mine but it is on my paperwork. So if something goes wrong, I'm NOT eating it.

I just did my 1200 mi service Monday (12/19/11) Rolf.
I was proactive to remind them about the diff fluid and the transmission fluid before I even handed them the keys. Here's my invoice: Standard Scope service Oil Change; - 114010 Oil Filter - 832511 TWS Synthetic Oil 10W60 Running Inspection; - SAF-XJ:832514 Final-Drive Gear Oil - 832512 1/2 Liter (Diff Oil) Of course no charge, and the only difference I can see is that the trans filter is not on the Invoice. Otherwise, not much has changed since May 09 BTW... I didn't list full part numbers, just list numbers. The SA was wrong.

This is direct from BMW's website..but I think they only replace tranny fluid for DCT not 6MT
Read diagnostic system, change oil while vehicle is at operating temperature, replace transmission fluid when applicable, replace differential fluid when applicable. Check all warning/indicator lights check control, road test with check of brakes, suspension, steering, clutch (manual transmission) |

Just had mine done in Oz, MDCT though:
"Carried out running in service as required service - running-in check service - rear axle differential carry out complementary basic vehicle wash and vacuum" What the SA actually said: "We'll change the engine oil and filter, change the diff oil and check all other filters. We also check the suspension, tires etc." I think the MDCT is sealed and is never to be serviced - think I read something in the manual about this. 6MT will be different obviously. |

1200 mile service is one of life's great mystery's. Mine was a complete debacle. Service manual said A service adviser said B service manager said C different dealership said D and when I contacted BMW NA they would not answer the question. The entire process was a FAIL. BMW NA should step up and tattoo the 1200 mile service requirements on the windshield of the car. On a more positive note I have concluded it must not be THAT critical because if it was things would not be so fuzzy.

From the Service and Warranty Information manual for a 2012 M3 on page 6-7 it states:
The engine in your BMW M3 is a race-bred engine design which includes increased power output and maximum engine speeds compared to a conventional BMW 3 Series engine. The increased power output also affects other major drivetrain components, such as the transmission and the rear axle differential. The 1200 Mile Service requires changing the oil in the engine, as well as in the standard-equipment manual transmission (transmission fluid does not need to be changed for an M3 with the optional M-DCT Drivelogic transmission) and the differential. Note: M3 with the optional M-DCT Drivelogic transmission does not require changing the transmission fluid. The fluid has a long-term rating and does not need to be changed except for system repairs. That's straight from the manual....can't imagine it's any different in Canada than in the US. |
