I think my car ate a bird...
I was driving along and noticed a small bird fly across the road and then turn back right in front of me low down. Next thing I know, there's a good sized puff of what looked like feathers that flew out of the top driver side hood vent. I don't really have time to open up the airbox, but I'm not sure I really want to at this point.

I would probably call Capt. Sully Sullenberger for insight.

I wouldnt doubt it, when I blast through a lot of leaves at 40-50mph some shoot up through the LH hood vent, bigger ones get caught underneath and the stems stick out until I slow down and they drop down. Had to clean them out a couple times, you dont have to take the airbox apart, its a pretty direct shot from the bumper inlet to the hood vent.

@aus: Open up the airbox and clean it out. My M3 sucked in three birds thus far (and a fox killed itself by running head-on into my passenger door). I have no idea, why they chose my car to commit suicide, but it's a mess. Especially if the outside temperatures are not near freezing. The heat in the engine bay will not help either.

It may sound hillarious, but actually it's not if your going fast enough and the bird is big enough. One of mine was a crow on the Autobahn and all of the sudden you have blood and guts explode right into the drivers line of vision. And yes... the windshield wipers were obviously not made to clear that kind of mess. I honestly have no idea why none of the engineers just came up with the idea of simply mounting a grille in the air intake. It's just as dumb as having the vent on the left in the first place and thus blowing rain exactly where you least want it on a left-hand-drive car.
